INTERVIEW: Ren

Hi Conor, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I have been great thank you. I’m writing these words just a few hours before I spend a week on holiday in Ireland so I’m pretty excited.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Coast”?

The Coast is the second single that I’ve released following my debut ‘My Heart Belongs To Ireland’ in March this year. It’s about following that yearning feeling to explore and experience new things.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I was struggling to find motivation with music a few years ago. I was living in London, I had no money and I felt that I kept on writing songs about the same old boring things. Being in that rut inspired me to go off and explore and that in turn inspired me to write ‘The Coast’.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yeh, I’ve recorded the video and it’s all ready to be released. I recorded some lovely scenic shots of the North East English coast line. I think I’ll release it towards the end of September sometime.

How was the recording and writing process?

I actually wrote the foundation of the song around 4 or 5 years ago but I only revisited it and finished it off this year. I called up a few of my musician friends and we went to record it in June at a studio in Essex with a producer friend of mine, Tom loffman.

What role did your short journey throughout Europe get to influence your music?

I found a true sense of freedom. I was completely in control of where I went, how long I went for and who I wanted to spend my time with. It was a strange experience at first because most of us in our daily lives have constraints of some sort and the sudden realisation of ‘Hey, I can do anything!’ can be overwhelming. I don’t think that experience has necessarily influenced ‘The Coast’ in terms of it’s musical arrangement but in the future I’m definitely going to be more freeform in my music to represent that freedom I spoke of.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I’m going to be releasing an E.P in early 2017 and most of it is recorded already. I’m going to head back to the studio in November to add one extra track to make it a 5 track E.P.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Possibly Feb 2017. No title as yet.

Any plans to hit the road?

I want to make 2017 the year where I gig as much as possible. So watch this space!

What else is happening next in Ren’s world?

My uncle, Harry Owen, is a poet and I’m in the process of going through his 5 published works to pick out poems that I’d like to write music for. One day I’d like to release an E.P of his words with my music.
