INTERVIEW: Water Street

How would you classify your music?

Our music is primarily as pop/folk, but we have a number of different influences as well–we have some elements of jazz, bluegrass and rock in some of our songs.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Our top musical influences include Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Lindsey Sterling, Ed Sheeran and Norah Jones.

What do you want fans to take from your music?

We really want people to enjoy what we write, and feel like they can relate to it. We want them to feel that we are passionate about our writing and our message in each song.

Can you tell us a bit about your latest album? When will it be released and how does it differ from your previous work?

Our debut album came out this past winter, and includes all original songs. Dave wrote most of the songs and we all arranged them together. We had so much fun recording this album; we learned a lot about ourselves, both emotionally and musically, as well as about our group dynamics.

What do you love and hate about the Music Business?

We love meeting other musicians. A crucial part of becoming a better musician is making connections and taking tips from the pros, and we’ve met so many supportive, accomplished musicians along the way. Hearing about their own experiences and receiving feedback is invaluable to us as young performers.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

Our favorite concert was Jason Mraz at Radio City Music Hall. The audience was so engaged in his performance; he had a way of involving every single person in the hall. It was awesome to admire his musicianship and songwriting skills in person. Also, the crowd was calm and respectful– you could tell that they really admired his work.

Is there a song on this latest CD that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

Our favorite song, collectively, is Colors. We think that it’s really indicative of the close bond that we all have with each other, as well as how much fun we have whenever we play together.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last few years? What made you decide to come back into the music business?

Over the past few years, we’ve all become much more accomplished musicians. We like to experiment and try to give our songs unique sounds with instrument combos that you don’t usually hear. In addition, we’ve learned a lot about our group dynamics and how to accomplish things in the most efficient way possible. The past few years have also taught us about the importance of a balance between constructive self-criticism and acceptance.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, get drunk with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

We would have to say Jason Mraz. He seems like a really insightful, modest guy that would be easy to have a conversation with. He has some really in-depth, spectacular lyrics too.

So tell us what’s next?

Both Dave and I will be attending college away from our hometown this fall, but we have a number of new originals already written and we hope to record them eventually and release another album or EP eventually!
