Beats 1 Matt Wilkinson tells us “Australia’s a busy place when it comes to great pop music right now, but Middle Kids stand out from the crowd. The songwriting is smart, the choruses are massive. They’re a new band to get excited about” while Noisey write “Hannah’s voice is a little Stevie Nicksie and the jangly guitars sound like they’re lifted from an interstitial scene in Singles, but you know sometimes you hear a song and you just like it. You can’t say why.”
Middle Kids told Noisey “We wrote and recorded Your Love quickly and it felt natural,” explain Hannah and Tim from the band. “‘Sometimes I wanna give up on this love, but then I hear you call,’ is when we hold two contradictory truths equally in our hearts with full confidence. It was important to us that the song felt raw, that the wood and metal and physical dimensions of the rooms and instruments could be experienced. We wanted Hannah to sing not to you or for you, but with you. We hope that it treats you right.”
Their ambitious first single ‘Edge of Town’ pricked the ears of KEXP, KCRW and KROQ and Stereogum premiered saying “The song is anchored by Hannah Joy’s gripping vocals and some of the most natural and non-overpowering slide guitar work I have heard to date. It all builds to a gradual tempo change that brings the track to a blistering finale.”
Middle Kids will be releasing their new EP this fall, it was self produced and recorded at their home in Sydney. The band will be here in the US later this year. Watch this space for details.
