Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We have been great thanks!!  Loving the summer months and excited about the release of our first EP this fall.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Brand New Soul”?  Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

For many years I tried to keep my music and personal life separate.  I still struggle with how much of my personal story to share but my songs have always been a reflection of my personal life and story.  Sometimes I worry about being too transparent.  But in reality, I wear my heart on my sleeve.

Brand New Soul is that kind of a song.  It’s a very personal story about my many-year-struggle with infertility, which lead me down a path of self-reflection.

After several miscarriages over 6 years, I happened upon a presentation by my friend Jamie Janover, who had been travelling around talking on Nassim’s Unified Field Theory.  In Nassim’s Theory, humans are 100 trillion cells made of billions of atoms each, so we are made of quintillions of little black holes.  We are all vortexes in space-time, curling to stillness. We access that stillness is by pointing our attention inward, yet knowing we are connected to everything around us.

This put an image in my mind of “a spark of dust”.  The universe began with an explosion, as does life.  That was very meaningful to me at the time because of the fertility rollercoaster my husband and I had endured.  The experience had left me with so many conflicting perspectives on what was happening and why.

What was emerging was my ability to be present in my grief but at the same time accept what was happening.  Who am I to expect anything from life? I was taking each day as it came and was doing my best.

The losses helped me see how very mysterious life is…what a strange miracle it is to create life.  It was so tangible for some and so fleeting for others. What helped me through the tough times was feeling connected to something bigger and more universal than myself.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Not yet, but I would love to visually match the feeling of this song.

How was the recording and writing process?

Brand New Soul started as a simple drum loop.  I created something that made me want to dance and then one day after a band rehearsal for one of my other projects I asked my friend Danny Sears to add some kind of simple Rhodes part.  He jammed along with the loop for a few minutes and then went on his way.  I then chopped it up into my favorite moments, added a bridge and then sang over it.  Eventually, Kip transformed it with his magical production skills and now it’s one of my favorite songs on the EP!

What drew you to blend electronic music with Jazz?

I was very inspired by the Verve Remixed compilation albums throughout the 2000’s as well as bands like Zero 7, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, and Bitter:Sweet.  The music appealed to me because it was deeply funky and almost tribal at times but also melodic and elegant.  I have such varied tastes in music and I loved the idea of bridging all of my influences (Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Brazilian Jazz) and musical experience into one project.  I love to connect intellectually with songs and stories but I also love when music allows me to have an out of body experience.  I am captivated when music lifts me to another reality.  That what drives me these days!

A lot of the live electronic shows I have seen this past few years seem so monotone to me.  They lack complex melodic changes and the vocals tend to be one simple line that repeats.  That style has it’s place but as a songwriter I am more interested in finding a way to bring back the beauty of the story and the song.  I’m interested in that balance between sexy, funky dance music and the melodic complexities of vocal jazz.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes!  We are sending our first EP to the manufacturer this Friday.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We will release our first EP, Songs From My 3rd Life, on September 16th.

Any plans to hit the road?

Our hope is to continue to play live in Colorado this fall and winter and eventually reach out to other markets by the spring/summer of 2017.

What else is happening next in piKziL’s world?

In addition to Songs From My 3rd Life, which will be released Sept. 16th, we will release our second EP in January of 2017.

We also have a couple of videos in the works and are very excited about that!
