INTERVIEW: Sophia Danai

Hi Sophia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been very well Thank you!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bitter”?

Bitter is a song about the fantasy of revenge, and the obsession over events after you have been hurt and betrayed.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

A toxic break up after the person I was with was unfaithful. To be honest, the relationship was pretty unhealthy so looking back it was all for the best.

How was the film experience?

Amazing, Jon Thomas is a brilliant director and we had such an amazing team that gave everything they had to make the video a success. I loved the opportunity to be on camera and flex my acting muscles a bit, it was a lot of fun.

How was the recording and writing process?

The session was actually magic, it was the first session Brevner and I ever had, and it was clear right away that we connected musically and as friends. We stepped into the studio and literally the first thing he played was the synth progression and the song wrote itself after that.

What was it like to work with Brevner and how did that relationship develop?

Brevner and I had been trying to work together for a couple years, and the timing never quite worked out. We finally connected and it was just one of those rare personal and musical connections that you cannot take for granted in this industry. I have learnt so much from working with him, and he has become one of my good friends. I’m sure you will see more from us in the future.

How much did he get to influence the album?

He definitely influenced me creatively, and had a big hand in inspiring me to self-produce which made our tracks very collaborative on that front. I loved working with him because he knew when to give me space to develop my own ideas, and when to step in – we are very good that way as a team, there is no ego we just do what is best for the song.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming?

Yes, the single is from my album Love Royale which is out now and available everywhere you can buy music!

Would all the songs deal with toxic relationships?

The album deals with a range of things, but I think the main theme is self empowerment, and the journey out of a toxic relationship with my ex, and with myself. I named it Love Royale, because it became clear to me that Love has ultimate power over all of us – it’s what drives us. Having a healthy definition of love and respecting the weight of it will keep you from being torn apart by it, hopefully…
