…and a few other genres thrown in, including jazz, classic rock, punk, and cabaret music. The songs are haunting and neurotic, humorous and nostalgic. Dark and sometimes morose lyrics paint a disturbing picture of the daily life of a lone, borderline neurotic, urban dweller set to the background of upbeat minor key melodies.
Currently based in NYC, Mad Meg is fronted by Moscow-born singer-songwriter, Ilya Popenko. His revolving 5 to 6-piece band is complete with jazzy piano, trombone and driving bass led by Popenko’s raspy baritone. (Think of a Russian Tom Waits mixed with Gogol Bordello.) They released their EP, Shake It Like You’re Dead, in 2015, and are set to release their debut full-length album, Puberty Tales, this fall. Listen here.
