INTERVIEW: Smile Davis
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Can’t Get Home”?
SD: “I Can’t Get Home was inspired by the stresses of real life and for the need to escape from it all.” The start of the video shows me getting kicked out, all I’m left with are the clothes on my back and my trusty duffel bag and with this starts my journey from reality to an abstract dreamworld.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
SD: Real life.
How was the film experience?
SD: So much fun, the scenery was amazing and the night life crazy.
Dego the director was great to work with, “I did have a little problem with the rowing boat scene, see my Olympic style action rowing at the back end of the vid”, lol.
How was the recording and writing process?
SD: There are so many situations in life that inspire me to write, whether it’s from my own experiences or a reflection of what I see around me, or hearing a cool backing trk or a melody that just pops into my head, or lyric that moves me.
Once I’m happy with a rough idea, it’s taken to my Producers “The Next Room” who take it to the next level.
What was it like to work with “The Next Room” and how did that relationship develop?
SD: Richie and Bobby pka “The Next Room” are humble and down to earth guys, great to work with, they bring a wealth of experience and they totally get me musically.
How much did they get to influence the album?
SD: The Next Room’s contribution helped me shape my album and further develop my sound.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
SD: Third single is almost ready to slip stream off the back of “I can’t get home” the Smile Davis team want to keep things moving on up.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
SD: It’s coming soon.
Would all the songs deal with the stress of life?
SD: Lol, there’s more to life than just stress. I hope my album reflects that.
Any plans to hit the road?
SD: There’s a radio / club tour in the making.
What else is happening next in Smile Davis’ world?
SD: Preparing an unplugged collection of my songs, whist preparing for my tour.
