INTERVIEW: Sophie Cotterell
Hi Sophie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! I’m all good thank you.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Champagne Lips”?
Champagne Lips was the track I chose to become my first single, as I felt the timing was right, with us being in the midst of summer. People prefer to listen to a dance type track this time of year, we’ll save the slushy ballads for Christmas! Ha!
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
A lot of people ask me this question, but it wasn’t really. I imagined the scenario and wrote accordingly, however I have used particular lines which may reflect on personal experiences that could be incorporated within the song.
How was the film experience?
It was actually really fun! This was because it was not just myself and directors, extras were invited on set, so I got to interact with them and watch them do their individual dance pieces! Which is actually my favorite part of the video!
What was it like to work with Only Jack Jones and how did that relationship develop?
I didn’t get to work with Jack Jones in person, and there wasn’t any need to. Initially we knew the track needed an extra kick, so that’s when we gave it to Jack Jones to see what he could do with it. So any feedback or changes to be made were communicated through email etc.
How much did he get to influence the single?
He altered the existing beat I already had, however I wrote the song myself.
The single comes off your new album New Dawn – what’s the story behind the title?
I wanted the title to represent the ‘beginning’, ‘starting out’. This is my first EP and the first time I am exposing my own tracks to the public. So I wanted it to reflect this step as being a new venture.
How was the recording and writing process?
I always feel pretty relaxed on the day of recording as I have already written the tracks months in advance. The engineer always makes me feel so relaxed, and knows how to push me in the right direction, when it comes to recording at my best. We have a good working relationship, which always helps! I am always open to altering what I’ve already written, and including ideas suggested by others in the studio. I find the recording process so interesting, as the vibe or outlook on the track you walk in with, will always end up something completely different, which is always unexpected! And I love that revelation!
Would you be inviting other special guests?
There were ideas about a rapper featuring on a recent song I wrote and recorded, however there are no plans as of yet!
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I imagined a scenario of two people who have been in a toxic relationship, but can’t seem to completely separate. For example, maybe bumping into each other in a club environment, still keeping a close eye on one another, and fighting against the urge to get drawn back to them.
Any plans to hit the road?
If given the opportunity I would yes, but there are no plans as of yet.
What else is happening next in Sophie Cotterell’s world?
Summer is the best time of year for gigging, so I am performing at small festivals across Gloucestershire throughout August. My biggest performance of the year will be at Witcombe Cider Festival, supporting the likes of Judge Jules and Lethal Bizzle. As well as that, I am currently trying to be in the studio as much as possible, recording tracks to add to the EP.
