INTERVIEW: Irish folk/rock band The Dandy Horses

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Very excited!  Finally… we have launched our album and this is coming on the back of a successful tour of Germany and Holland.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hard Luck Down”?

Of course.  Hard Luck Town is the title track from our debut album ‘Tales From Hard Luck Town’.  We think it is a great curtain opener for the album which is a collection of songs, each telling the tale of a different character who lives in Hard Luck Town. Although there is a dark undercurrent to the album, some of the songs are surprisingly upbeat and Hard Luck Town is a good example of this… a catchy upbeat number with a social message.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

A relationship breakdown which precipitated a move from suburban bliss to bleak inner city.   I discovered a sense of vulnerability that I had never recognised before and I became acutely aware of how easy it is to fall off the social ladder.  Being woken up be the screams of under aged drinkers and homeless drug addicts became a nightly occurrence.

How was the film experience?

It was deeply meaningful and a life changing experience….  lol.  Sorry, but we have to say that as it is Sean from the band who makes the videos for us!  As with all things with the band we are self-funded so everything we do is on a limited and tight budget.   We used a 10 year old laptop and an ordinary camera to put it all together.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

Hard Luck Town is a preamble to all the songs which follow.  It lets the listeners know what to expect throughout the album and ties all the other songs together. Of course,  Hard Luck Town is not only a physical place but also a situation in which anyone could find themselves.

How was the recording and writing process?

As it was self funded it was a little slower than we would have liked but it is always a fun process!  We bring the songs to the band  and then let them take on a life of their own as each member of the group adds their own little something to the arrangement.  Sometimes the song goes in totally a different direction than expected.

What role did The Mamas and Papas and Fleetwood Mac play on this album?

Haha…. well there are two couples in the band which is like Fleetwood Mac… but there’s a little less drama! The album is also full of rich harmonies and there are 3 main lead singers in the band which is possibly why some people have compared us to The Mamas and Papas and Fleetwood Mac.  But everyone hears something totally different in our music.

What led you to write this dark lyrics?

Already covered in previous answer.

What life experiences get to inspire the lyrics on this material?

Already covered in previous answer.

Any plans to hit the road?

Well we have just returned from a tour of Germany and Holland which was very exciting.  We played at some great festivals and were very well received and looked after.  We would love to arrange a tour of Britain… so if you can put us in touch with any good promoters…?  Lol

What else is happening next in The Dandy Horses’ world?

We are acutely aware that you can’t sit still… so it’s gig, gig, gig,  write, write, write and on with the next album!
