Hi Mathew, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! I’ve been doing really great thanks for asking. A bit of a busy time here, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “If I’m Enough”?
Ahh “If I’m Enough.” It has become one of my favourite songs on the record. It was the first song that set the theme for the record. When I envisioned this album in my head, “If I’m Enough” would be the exact sonic reference that I had in mind. Dark, harmony-saturated brit-pop.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
This track really encompasses a period in my life. “If I’m Enough” is based on the emotions and overall feeling of insecurity that was brought upon by someone who I fell hard for, unjustly so, but hard none the less. This record has helped me walk through and process those insecurities.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
*smirk*… I may have been working on something with over the last 4 months. Keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks. *smirks again*
How was the recording and writing process?
I love the visionary and writing process. Locking myself in a room, itemizing my emotions, what I want to say, and watching the project start to walk, and then run. The recording process was a lot of Matt Rogers and I trapped in the studio, and him having to put up with my neurosis. Bless him.
What was it like to work with Matt Rogers and how did that relationship develop?
Working with Matt Rogers was an absolute dream. I reached out to Matt after hearing his work, and as an avid listener to his blues-rock group “Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer” I knew that he could create a huge sound, and that he quite simply had endless taste. I came to him with rough voice memos of the songs plunked out in root position, and I am very lucky that he saw potential and jumped on board. Onwards and upwards from there, we spent 8 months slowly tracking and polishing the record.
How much did he get to influence the album?
Well Matt is a man of many talents, and he took on a whole lot under the title of “Producer.” Matt is responsible for almost all of the arrangements on the record, not to mention playing piano, guitar and bass. What people may not know about Matt is that he is an unbelievable seasoned composer and he took this record to a place that I couldn’t have fathomed. I am so very grateful that he was on board.
How’s your new album coming along?
The album is finished! Slowly giving away bits and pieces and I’m so excited to show more.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The record is called “Sounds.” I feel like music has seasons and “Sounds” is definitely a fall record, which is sneaking up fast! You can expect it with the change of the leaves (I’m hoping…)
Would you be playing with different styles on this new record as you did with the song?
I named the album “Sounds” because that’s just it, there are so many different sounds and inspirations. These are the sounds that are relevant to me at this time in my life. The sounds that inspire me. You’ll hear soul, gospel, blues, pop, and some edge, but also some very intimate moments.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m hoping so! Once the record is out I’d love to have another chat regarding tour plans. The sights are set for sure.
What else is happening next in Mathew V’s world?
I’m keeping busy developing my sound and finding new inspirations. I’m writing with some pretty amazing artists at the moment for their records, which I love. I gain a lot of versatility when I can partake and witness someone else’s process. But in the present I am just busting my butt getting some live arrangements together, working hard on getting this record out there, and trying to go to sleep better than I was in the morning. Thats all I can ask for.
