Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Like A Holiday”?
We were so excited when we finally had the chance to share Like a Holiday with everyone. The song was in works since before Cinders was even Cinders. It started out as a very basic song with just a simple drum beat and rhythymic guitar, and slowly everyone added to it, removed peices from it, and completely reconstructed the song. It ended up being what we thought would be the perfect song to release our first music video with.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
The whole idea behind the song was started from that one irrational crush that everyone has had on somebody famous that they’ve never actually met. And also the very rational possibility that the feeling isn’t that mutual.
How was the film experience?
Hilarious. It was so fun seeing all the people that came out to film the video going so far outside their comfort zone while some not having any background in music or playing instruments, and putting them on a stage in front of people playing a song they hadn’t yet heard. It was great.
The single comes off your new self-titled album – why naming this record after the band?
Well we felt that the album defines us as a band really well. It has all of the elements that we absolutely love. Upbeat, fun, inspirational, rowdy and weird songs from start to finish. What better album to release as a self-titled album than this one?
How was the recording and writing process?
We did all of the recording and writing independently. So it was very fun having control over creating exactly the kind of music we wanted, but it was also very challenging. We really grew as a band through it because all 5 of us contributed to the process very equally. Taking turns at the computer while the other one sleeps, Brad working on a laptop editing the sound of the drums in the most uncomfortable sitting position for hours at a time, too many late night Taco Bell runs between Austin and Montana, having to re-record Adrian’s bass tracks a hundred times due to him never being happy enough with his bass tone, Jordan’s wife Kelly sitting patiently between takes trying to keep herself from dying of boredom… It was the best.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
We like to keep the writing very ambiguous because we don’t feel that they are really “our” songs. If we inject our own lives into them too much then it’s almost as if we’re stealing the many different personal meanings that anyone else can have toward the song. We love asking our fans what meanings they find in certain songs. It’s so fun hearing all of the different interpretations. So to answer your question, we find the inspiration in everything. Things that everyone (including us) goes through.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’ve actually been doing some hitting the road already. We’ve traveled to Boise ID, St. George UT, Rexburg ID, Denver CO, Idaho Falls ID and we plan to go to Tempe AZ and Torrey UT before the end of summer. Meeting new people in new places is one of our favorite things. Also, the food is always great.
What else is happening next in Cinders’ world?
We are currently rounding up our summer tour with only 5 concerts left. We’re sad to be calming down in that aspect, but we’re excited to start working on other things, such as more music videos, interviews, acoustic performances, etc.. Special shout out to everyone that has supported/helped us in the last year of touring. You guys are the best, and we can’t wait to show you what’s coming next.
