Canadian singer-songwriter Emma-Lee proves once again she’s a force to be reckoned with as she delivers an impassioned and bold rendition of “How Will I Know” – the 1985 classic from the late Whitney Houston. Filmed and recorded at Toronto’s own Revolution Recording studio, this version is like none heard before – haunting and beautifully melodic – a stunning homage to one of Emma-Lee’s biggest musical inspirations. “I’m not a formally trained singer so I always joke that Whitney Houston taught me how to sing because really, it was artists like her that I would sing along to endlessly growing up,” says Emma-Lee. “My parents had a copy of her debut on vinyl and “How Will I Know” was just one of those feel good songs that I’d dance around the house to. With this version I really wanted to showcase the perfection of the song’s lyric by slowing it down and stretching out the words on that first chorus. I want the listener to really be overtaken by the excruciating unknown – “if he loves me…if he loves me not.””
Earlier this year Emma-Lee released “Worst Enemy” a Top 20 hit at HOT AC radio. The track was selected for Bell Media’s “Future Stars” program and Fresh Radio’s “Next Big Thing” feature and showcased both her musicianship and technical prowess and most notably – a departure from her past musical fashion. Gravitating back to her first love of rich sounding pop music, Emma-Lee set out to introduce listeners to the girl from the 90s who wore out TLC’s “CrazySexyCool” album and loaded her Discman with Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Lauryn Hill; a girl whose soulful pop roots know no bounds.
