INTERVIEW: Heirsound

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

(Dane): We’ve been great, thanks for having us.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hoods Up”?

(Dane): “Hoods Up” is the darkest song on the EP & probably one of the more interesting songs I’ve ever been a part of creating as far as the mood of it goes. There was a very particular feeling in the day we wrote it. We did our best to apply it lyrically & melodically.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

(Alexa): It’s not about one particular incident as it is more about describing a feeling. The chorus says, “We’ve got our hoods up” & it means just that. That mood where you put on a big sweatshirt & headphones & zone out away from everyone.

How was the film experience?

(Alexa): Intimate, as most of our video shoots are.  I myself freelance video so I usually come up with the plan & we execute it the best we can!

The single comes off your new album Merge – what’s the story behind the title?

(Alexa): We felt like it was an appropriate word to describe both Dane & I coming together from two separate coasts of the US.  Merge is our first piece of art created under the name HEIRSOUND so we felt it was fitting.

How was the recording and writing process?

(Dane): Both processes were special & important for the two of us individually & as a duo. It was the start of something new & a true 50/50 collaboration where neither of us felt like we were holding back or compromising when it came to the music. The heart & time go into everything we do. There was no pressure, just excitement & free range to experiment both in our writing space & in the studio.

What led you to write an album based on colors?

(Dane): We didn’t write the songs based around the colors as much as we saw the colors when we’d close our eyes & listen to them. It was a natural, unforced feeling that we felt would not only be a great way to represent each song, but something we looked forward to bringing to life.

(Alexa): The colors were an after-thought, something that evolved as we narrowed down the EP to 6 songs.

Why these colors in particular?

(Dane): Like i said before, colors would come up while listening. But when we made the connection that 3 primary & 3 secondary colors would represent each of the 6 songs, they were applied easily.

(Alexa): Right, once we decided on the color theme we had to assign each song a color based on how felt when we closed our eyes and listened.

Would you call this a departure from your previous project or a follow up?

(Alexa): HEIRSOUND is definitely it’s own being compared my previous band Love, Robot.  That was a chapter that I decided to close after years of growing & learning.  This EP is what I would consider a bridge for long time fans to hopefully come follow me into this new project.

Any plans to hit the road?

(Dane): We’re always making plans for all things HEIRSOUND. But we do our best to keep them under wraps until the right time. So our supporters can look forward to that information as soon as possible!

What else is happening next in Heirsound’s world?

(Dane): We haven’t been able to stop writing! We’re always looking to further progress & dig deeper into the sound. One of the many things we’re aiming to share as soon as possible. Other than that we’re content machines so our listeners can look forward to new visuals consistently.

(Alexa):  Once the EP is out on August 5th we will immediately be brainstorming & writing for our debut album.  The EP gives everyone a taste of just the beginning of HEIRSOUND & we hope that you all follow us on our journey.
