Hey, we’ve been great! We just got back from hitting a couple stops on a little weekend tour run and had some great shows and had an absolute blast out on the road!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “All Of You”?
All Of You is the latest single off of our recently released full-length album “Keep Watch”. It’s a song that is definitely a favorite among all us and one that we were really excited to shoot a video for and release for everyone else to jam.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I wouldn’t say any particular, single event inspired us to write All Of You, but rather the personal experiences of the past few years. The song is about a boy and a girl who love one another, but the girl can’t give him her whole heart. Everyone wants to love and to be loved and knowing you aren’t receiving 100% of that person’s efforts takes a mental and physical toll. Deep down they know their love is doomed, but their desire for anther causes them to avoid and dodge the inevitable.
How was the film experience?
Filming this video was ridiculous. We we’re fortunate enough to get access to Moundsville State Penitentiary for the day and could basically do whatever we wanted. The video was produced by Charles Ryan Associates and they did a fantastic job, delivering exactly what we had envisioned. The video turned out great and have received some great, positive feedback about it so far!
The single comes off your new album Keep Watch – what’s the story behind the title?
The title “Keep Watch” comes from a place of living in the moment even when life has you at your most vulnerable. Many tracks off of the album, such as Cold Blooded, All Of You, and Check Please, explore dark themes of apathy, loneliness, and even anger. However through all of this darkness shines songs such as Material Drive By, Keep Watch, and Weather that really speak to the idea that although life isn’t exactly going your way, it’s important to stay focused on the positives in your life and understand that these dark emotions are normally only temporary. Hopefully our fans can find this inspiration and apply it to their own lives.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing and recording Keep Watch was a long, slow, and (at-times) stressful process. Coming off of a couple of EP’s where we were really trying to define our sound and set us apart, we wanted to really make sure that what we were to about to put out was exactly what we wanted. So we were very careful about what songs we wanted to include in the album, the tone we were trying to achieve, and the overall emotion that was contained within Keep Watch to make sure that all of our hard work was going into something that sounded fresh, new, and real to us.
We wrote and recorded Keep Watch ourselves in Josh’s [guitar] apartment. We all work full-time jobs, so we basically ran over to Josh’s whenever any of us had a second to spare to try to record a few parts here and there. We learned a lot along the way and eventually started to see the final product come together.
What role did the Appalachian play in your music?
We love West Virginia and are so proud to be from the Appalachian region, but to be honest, the state’s alternative music scene is not the biggest and greatest. We prefer to look at this as an advantage however. Although it’s harder for us to gain attention, being a bit more isolated allows our music to come from a place of originality and keeps us from getting caught up in whatever fads are trendy or popular at any given moment. We try our best to make sure we’re not trying to replicate what anyone else is doing, and come up with a sound that is the sum of all of our individual influences. We believe this results in music that is hopefully new and better in the long run.
What aspects of romance did you get to explore with this album?
The majority of our music explores themes of falling in and out of love and all of the intense emotions that goes with all of that. Keep Watch is no different, in that all of the songs are based around the personal experiences in relationships and in life over the past two years that all of us have experienced. The best, and most honest, music comes from the heart, so we tried to let our emotions pour out onto these tracks in order to create something that our fans could really connect with on a real level.
Any plans to hit the road?
Definitely! We actually are fortunate enough to have won a spot to play the main stage at this year’s Van’s Warped Tour stop in Burgettstown, PA on July 15th. After that we plan to take a couple weeks off before doing a “back to school” run of shows in August. Keep an eye on all of social media pages for more information!
What else is happening next in A Story Told’s world?
We like to take things one day at a time and really live and enjoy all of the opportunities we are fortunate enough to have in the moment. As I said, we’re all so excited and honored to be able to play main stage at the Warped Tour this year and hit a couple cities in the following weeks. Other than a bit of touring, we will be continuing to push Keep Watch to as many people as will give us the time of day. We’re all so, so proud of this record and want to share it with the world.
