Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Games”?
It’s an awesome track. I got to work with Brandon Friesen who’s just an amazing producer. He gave me a lot of creative space to make the track as “JOLIVI” as possible. My heart truly went into this song.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, a relationship that I was in recently that did not end so well.
The single comes off your new EP Just For You – what’s the story behind the title?
Well it is not really a nice “just for you” – it’s more like a middle finger in the air just for you! Referring back to that relationship of course 😉
How was the recording and writing process?
At times it was really emotional, stressful, and tiresome, but the end result makes all the effort worthwhile. I put a lot of my feelings into this album and that can really take an emotional toll on you.
What was it like to work with Brandon Friesen and how did that relationship develop?
One of the best experiences of my life. He never settled for just my best. He wanted perfect. He pushed me to go beyond my limits. He is definitely a mentor in my everyday life. Not just music. When you can create a strong bond between an artist and producer it can be real magic. We have a deep connection.
How much did he get to influence the album?
The album is definitely ME, but portrayed through his eyes in that he was the one behind the board making the sounds happen.
Does Hawaii play a role in your music?
Hawaii is everything to me. My family lives there and some of my closest friends are there. It’s comforting and inspirational to know that I have all that still, but it’s not really reflected in my songwriting.
How has LA influenced your music?
Hmmm.. I guess it has influenced me in the sense that I met my ex person there and then I found all these feelings and then wrote about them. So maybe it was the person more than the city lol.
What aspects of women’s life and struggles inspire the lyrics on this EP?
I don’t feel like I talk about women struggles in the form of what goes on in the world. It’s more just my struggles with this particular relationship. I want women to know that they are not alone with their feelings. That it’s ok to be crazy sometimes. Don’t let another person judge your feelings.
Any plans to hit the road?
YES! That is the main priority right now.
What else is happening next in JoLivi’s world?
Just finished promo photos for my next single “Chains” and shooting a music video for that in the middle of July. I am pretty excited about what’s going to be happening this year. I feel great where my career and life is right now!
