INTERVIEW: Kolton Stewart

Hi Kolton, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey there, I have been doing extremely well! I have been keeping very busy with my music and acting. I just finished filming a new movie, recording in the studio and I have been writing a lot of new music!

Can you talk to us more about your debut single “Context”?

I am very excited for “Context” to be released! I have been writing music for almost 5 years now and am so eager to get the chance to show the world what I’ve been creating all these years! I really feel that Context shows who I am as an artist and I felt that this particular song and timing was just right for a summer release.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Well there was this girl that I had liked for quite sometime but I don’t think she was ever into me. Then slowly the tables started to turn and she started to show interest but I panicked! She showed interest and I backed away because I felt like the timing wasn’t right and things were just moving too fast. Of course now I am kicking my self as I lost the opportunity to get tpo know her better but in the meantime the experience created this killer tune!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There have definitely been some ideas formulating around shooting a video for this song. I love to dance and would love to be able to show everybody what I can do! So stay tuned J

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process was awesome! Matthew Tishler has a home studio which is great because it created a very relaxed atmosphere so there was never any stress while writing and recording. Three of the four of the  writers were Canadian we all had to take our hourly breaks to watch the Blue Jays in the Championships!

What was it like to work with Matthew Tishler, Jesse Weeks and Phil Bentley?

Working with all these guys was phenomenal because even though they are all adults they have a very youthful approach so it was really easy to share with them my stories and thoughts. They are all great people and we all gelled together creatively.

How did those relationships develop?

I met Matthew while recording the theme song for my YTV/Netflix show “Some Assembly Required” as he wrote and produced the theme song “Here We Go”! I have known Jesse Weeks since 2014. We met at the UBCP awards in Vancouver and made the connection that we were both from Ontario. We then started to write many songs together including “Context”. Matthew and Phil have been friends and writing music for quite sometime so when Matthew asked if I wanted Phil to be apart of the writing session I obviously said an immediate yes after looking at Phil’s remarkable resume!

Were there any challenges working with all three?

There were absolutely no challenges. Sometimes writing with many people can be challenging as people tend to have their own ideas and beliefs and that can cause conflicts. But while writing this song there was none of that. We all connected with each other extremely well and respected everyone’s ideas and input.

How much did they get to influence the song?

As I was telling them the backstory of this song it seemed like every single one of them had a similar experience! So while writing we were able to pick bits and parts of the story from all four of our life experiences.

Does your acting get to influence your music or the way around?

They both influence each other in different ways. I am so thankful to be an actor and a singer/songwriter as I am able to take experiences and influences from both. While singing a song I can take my acting skills into effect so that I am able to convey the correct emotion. I also love when I get to act in a TV show or movie that requires me to sing. It’s the best of both worlds!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

It’s early days yet but I am constantly writing and working towards a collection of songs I can release.

Any plans to hit the road?

I love to be on the stage. I definitely have plans in the near future to start performing my original tunes. I’m excited to see what this year holds.

What else is happening next in Kolton Stewart’s world?

I plan to get right back in the studio and work on more music that I hope to release following Context! I am also working on my acting career and have some pretty awesome things coming down the pipeline! Stay connected with what I am up to via my socials below. Thanks so much for interviewing me!
