Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We are great! Thanks!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I|L|Y”?
Definetly, it is new territory for us really. I don’t think that we have ever gone this far into the electronic type genre. It is super exciting to be honest. We feel like we have finally found what kind of music we want to write through I|L|Y.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Not exactly, the song really came out of a season in life where I had to become an adult. The tension behind the song came out of the frustraition of growing up and having dreams of seeing the world and what not but still missing being safe at home where everything was perfect but maybe at the same time you were just a little bit discontent with it.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I can’t say that we have any plans to do a music video or anything like that but recently we have been messing around with the idea of making it a Live Performance video, primarily because it is one of the funnest songs to play live.
How was the recording and writing process?
I think our favorite part of writing and recording has to be the initial early stages where the song starts with a progression or lick and then you have to build your own type of puzzle and make the rest of the song come together. It is extremely satisfying even though at times it gets discouraging.
What role does Church plays in your music?
I’d have to say the church plays a role mainly in the narrative of our music. We try and communicate lyrically a battle between “good” and “evil” or even the contrast between “old” and “new” and all of these are themes that are found in the church today and it influences pop culture greatly. For instance, it is hard to see any movie that doesn’t communicate some kind of tension between to polar opposites.
Why did you choose simplicity rather the complexity?
I think mainly this was because so much of the music we are currently tracking now is very complex we need to insert songs like I|L|Y to calm things down a bit.
How’s your new EP coming along?
It is coming along great! This is a super exciting time for us. We can’t wait for people to hear the songs. It has been super cool recently to play songs like I|L|Y and have people sing it back to us.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Right now we are thinking mid September. But it could be sooner, we are just waiting on some things that are all up in the air!
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We have a couple dates this summer that you can find on our Facebook feed and we will be posting some on instagram and twitter also and we are currently talking about hitting a couple venues in Boston due to some requests and people who seem to enjoy our music.
What else is happening next in Mount Zion’s world?
We have a couple good surprise collaborations with other artists that we are super stoked about! Other than that as soon as the EP drops we are going to start putting together the full album and just play as much as we can for people. We are a reletively new band so I think that we will be doing a lot of learning as well.
