Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We have been great .excited for our first UK tour and finishing touches on our next record that should be released in 2017.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Liars Thieves and Ramblers”?
Liars thieves and ramblers is an Americana song about riding the rails across America. the long stretch from the east to the west . looking for lost love ,regrets of life ,alcohol ,hardluck ,a trip full of seedy characters.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I was reading some books about the life of Woody Guthrie and listing to his amazing catalog of songs .it was on one particular long tour across America .this experience made me think about woody riding the rails in a big rusted Box car and what he might have experienced. This painted a picture and helped me come up with the idea of liars thieves and ramblers.
How was the film experience?
Filming the video was an adventure .we went out to the blazing hot California desert ,surrounded by Joshua trees and train tracks. There was nearby a huge forest fire ,as you can see in the opening of the video there’s smoke in the background .we had to finish our takes and get the hell out of there before the fire got too close .We also shot down town in the Los Angeles rail yards .felt like real hobos jumping around the train engines and box cars .we got chased off by the railroad police right after we finished our last shot .the video was directed by c. Bistolfi .
The single comes off your new album South of Bakersfield – what’s the story behind the title?
The title south of Bakersfield is paying homage to the Bakersfield sound that is a heavy influence to Speedbuggy USA ,and the writing of this record. We live in Los Angeles now ,so we are “south of Bakersfield”.
How was the recording and writing process?
The Writing process was really thinking of what I could do with the Bakersfield sound .I wanted to take the history with much respect and make it my own. And Seth wanted that electrified chicken Pickin to pop at you .We recorded at hijack recording studio in Los Angeles .Seth SpeedBuggy’s guitarist ,produced ,engineered and mixed south of Bakersfield. We spent a lot of time trying to get the right tones .the right guitars and amps .we wanted a lot of that classic country sound on this work.
How did your love for Country started?
The love of country started as a young boy growing up in southern Louisiana .i was surrounded by country music , rockabilly, blue grass,Cajun , New Orleans soul and southern rock. Country music always seemed so pure back then. Not yet polluted by pop radio. My sound really is a mixture of Louisiana and Bakersfield with a heavy dose of British rock ‘n’ roll
What role does LA plays in your music?
Los Angeles is a great place to live .they have lots of great clubs to work on your sound and performance .my favorites are South Bay customs and the echo. I also like the people ,a great music community in this city.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I find inspiration for my songs. From reading and traveling .Being aware of what’s around me . A lot of my songs are about the hard life of the working class. I’m a blue-collar worker myself .I’ve been a Carpenter , plaster ,lumberjack clearing swampland all kinds of hands on jobs. I also like to write songs about the lost souls ,those who can’t put down the bottle, songs about the Devil tapping you on the back. Distant dreams of heaven.
Any plans to hit the road?
Speedbuggy USA Will be on tour in the UK during the month of July .we are also planning A Europe tour and a stateside tour .
What else is happening next in Speedbuggy USA’s world?
We are finishing up recording’s for speedbuggys next record. We are also recording a EP while we are in the UK. We have just finished two videos for the next record and are planning to film at least two more.
