Canadian Indie-pop quartet The Zolas have already conquered their homeland by having one of the longest-running songs on the Canadian Alternative Charts; staying in the top 20for 33 weeks along with critical acclaim. Additionally, their new single Swooner is currently number 11 on the Commercial Alternative Radio Charts In Canada along with being the#1 most Added at Mediabase Alternative Charts. As The Zolas are already gathering huge amounts of success in their home country, they’ve recently come over to the UK for The Great Escape, and shown the packed and excited audiences what they’ve got to offer show after show after show.
Their latest single Swooner opens with a strong rocky riff, but is soon carried into the sound of ‘80s- inspired pop bliss. The cool’n’crisp production incorporates the buoyant synthesizers with catchy melodies in a similar way to the Mystery Jets and Yukon Blonde (whom they’ll be performing with soon).Their retro sonic tour de force is effortlessly combined with the modern indie/ disco/ rock energetic feel of Bloc Party, giving us just a taste of The Zolas’ fresh and youthful burst of creative energy. It doesn’t end there though. The highlight must be the highly addictively striking chorus filled with hooks after hooks after hooks.
When asked what Swooner is about, the band replied: “It’s about those high-functioning women we all know who somehow manage to be the quarterback of their squad and the best at their job and politically engaged and the most fun person to have real talk with over beers. I don’t know how you ladies do it but we salute you.”
+ 360° Swooner Video: “It was just a spur of the moment idea. At shows we’ve noticed people cramming to the front to watch our feet and hands so when we found a 360 gopro mount on craigslist we thought let’s make a video where our diehard fans can watch exactly what any of us are doing in each song. That was the intention, but I expect the bulk of the views will just be women (and men) just zooming in tight on Cody the entire time. Democracy at last.”
