Day of the Dead — a celebration of the Grateful Dead’s music — was released last month via 4AD and is currently available through digital retailers. The impressive 10XLP limited edition vinyl boxset will be released September 9 and can be pre-ordered now on the 4AD Store. View photos of the multicolored vinyl boxset here.
In support of the release several contributing artists are making late-night TV appearances. The most recent was Unknown Mortal Orchestra who appeared on Conan Tuesday night playing “Shakedown Street.” Last week Courtney Barnett performed “Speedway Boogie” on The Tonight Show and release week saw The National performing “Morning Dew” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
A Day of the Dead live performance will take place this summer at the second annual Eaux Claires Festival (August 12-13) featuring Jenny Lewis, Matthew Houck (Phosphorescent), Lucius, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Sam Amidon, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Matt Berninger, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Bruce Hornsby, Ruban Nielson (Unknown Mortal Orchestra) and The National, who all appear on the record.
Day of the Dead is available for streaming here. It is a celebration of the Grateful Dead’s music and the 59 track compilation was created and curated by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. The album is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of the Dead which took four years to record, features over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds. All profits will help fight for AIDS/ HIV and related health issues around the world through the Red Hot Organization, a 501(c)3.
