After the quick success of new single,“When We Were Young,” indie pop artist Benjamin Dunn, known as The Wild Wild, has released his colorful, Wes Anderson-inspired music video for the hit track. About the new music video for “When We Were Young,” Dunn explains, “In the making of the video for ‘when we were young’ I wanted to play on the ideas of simplicity & purity, which of course are what the song really represents. I wanted to exaggerate the notion that magic can be found everywhere, even within the constructs we’re given in this world. We just have to look – and focus on the things that bring color, beauty & fun.”
Forever 21’s Tumblr page was the perfect platform to premiere the video as the page is a curated hub of discovery for music and fashion that integrates all content for #F21xMusic – a designated hashtag for the brand’s music initiatives. The Forever 21 Tumblr will grant fans insider access to exclusive interviews, Spotify playlists, pictures from the hottest music festivals from around the globe, ticket giveaways and content from up-and coming to established artists.
His wandering spirit has obviously informed a large part of his career to date. LA held his attention for a while, he started playing out wherever he could land a gig, eventually sharing stages with the likes of Bear Hands and Fitz and the Tantrums. New Orleans was home for a bit, he studied theology, played in churches, was a self-described Californian street kid in Santa Cruz. His latest move has been to the even more isolated, rural, forest of Pennsylvania, with the idea that it will further hone his artistic expression.
It’s then a bit of a dichotomy that The Wild Wild’s music projects such an air of innocence and celebration. That a young man who has seen so much of the country, including, presumably, many of its darker aspects, has held on to his sense of wonder to such a degree is in itself a wonder.
Dropping the needle on any part of The Wild Wild’s debut EP Kids is to be immersed in retro sonics reminiscent of 80’s synth based greats Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Springsteen and U2. In fact, Dunn is quick to reference the classic U2 track from 1984’s “Bad” with its “wide awake, I’m not sleeping” refrain, when describing his artistic philosophy. “To be awake, eyes wide open to beauty and magic, that’s my life philosophy, it makes you fearless knowing that the universe is ever conspiring for your happiness and something magical is about to happen right now. I don’t want to sleep through.
