Hi. We are doing very well. Having a lot of fun preparing for our album release show at Songbyrd here in DC on June 18.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Temporal”?
Well for one thing, for the longest time the ending was sort of mushy. It would just fade out. But, we knew the song wasn’t quite finished yet. And one night, we were playing around with it, and Augustus heard the rhythm for the ending, and it all fell into place. That song has always felt mystical from that moment on.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
No single event really. Just a lifetime of questions.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, actually. Cat’s out of the bag now.
The single comes off your new album Everything Is Light and Sound – what’s the story behind the title?
It is something we used to tell ourselves to overcome existential panic attacks throughout the making of the album. So much so, that we developed a jingle around the phrase that we are unveiling at our album release show with an animation that we made just for it.
How was the recording and writing process?
We were gypsys during the creation of the album. It was conceived on the west coast, but we’re giving birth to it on the east coast. All of the recording sessions were done in a very guerrila style. We honed in on the sonic pallette and vision for the album before we put anything on tape. The songs were mostly recorded live with few overdubs. It has a lot of energy because of this.
Known for blending different genres together – does one tends to shine out the most depending on the lyrics?
We blend styles and we blend the process. The lyrics, melody, rhythm and style all express themselves simultaneously, so it is difficult to unravel. It is usually a gut feeling that tells us how and what to incorporate at certain points, like we are listening for it to tell us where to take it. We are always listening for where to go next.
From all the genres, why did you choose to blend these in particular?
We make music that we want to listen to. It’s always being refined. It’s not manufactured. These are the sounds that connect with us. We are always making sure that the finished product is representative of our original vision. So, we check in a lot with the sounds we are creating and the transitions. We have to be really vulnerable to make sure our ego isn’t driving things.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Life, movies, books, nature, our imagination, other music, photography. Early child education. We have found that a lot of the things we are drawn to were introduced to us in early childhood. And it is all coming full circle for us now. Like a faded memory stored away for later.
Any plans to hit the road?
We play all the time, anywhere we can. We have plans for a southeastern tour in the fall. We play in New York and Philly, Baltimore and Charlottesville pretty regularly. Besides DC that is.
What else is happening next in The Galaxy Electric’s world?
We will be on the road for a while, but always have something in the works. We are explorers. Stay tuned on facebook or instagram. Even twitter if that’s your poison. Or simply www.thegalaxyelectric.com
