Home / Music / Artist Interviews / INTERVIEW: Higuera

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Valley Taylor: We’ve been extremely busy with work, recording, practice, and shows. It’s a wild ride to try and be a band in the year 2016.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pieces”?

V: It’s a really fun song to play live, you really can’t help but bob around while jamming. It’s also the least vocally demanding song in our set so for us it’s a great moment to chill and relax while playing so this song has a ton of positive energy for us.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

V: I wrote “Pieces” for my first wedding when I thought I was in love. Funny thing about love is it doesn’t really seem to last for very long, still love to play it tho.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

V: We actually have zero plans to do any videos mainly because we don’t have any clue at all what we want the visuals to be like. We’ve tried to just force out visuals before and the end product wasn’t very pretty.

The single comes off your new EP Always Have A Secret Plan – what’s the story behind the title?

V: It comes from recording the EP in 2013 and not releasing it until now haha. But really, it’s about everyone trying to put us in this box of what music should sound like and us just releasing this without the help of a label or scene.

How was the recording and writing process?

V: I The writting process is really easy, I write everything myself over the period of a few years and log them in a vault drive. After a couple years I pull songs out of the drive and teach them to the band and we play them. Recording was a great time too, we did pre pro for a couple weeks just figuring out what we were going to play and then we went in to Bay 7 Studios in Valley Vilage and cut it live. Recording this EP so far has been the most worthwhile day of being in this band personally, it really showed me that I want to do this for the rest of my life.

What was it like to work with Rob Kinelski and how did that relationship develop?

V: Working with Rob was awesome. He’s been a great motivator for this band to be better in every aspect. He really gave us a new appreciation of music and the recording process. He gave us all these little energy stones at the beginning of recording to keep and charge, we actually all still have them. It was a great experience working with him and we’re working a new batch of songs with him now.

How much did he get to influence the album?

V: Rob had a tremendous ammount of influence on the EP each week we got together before we recorded he would give us a couple old albums that he wanted us to listen to so we could catch the vibe of some classic albums and artists. The one that had the biggest and most lasting impression on me was The Bends by Radiohead.

I understand Rob is mostly known for his Hip Hop works – why did you guys decide to enter the studio with him considering you are a rock band? Were you seeking for a new urban direction?

V: I That’s actually something that we think about all the time, it’s crazy to get a chance to work with someone who works on all the music we hear on the radio and listen to all the time. We knew that he wanted to work on a rock album and our first meeting with him he told us about how he got his beginnings recording emo bands in New Jersy, after that we were pretty much sold.

How would you say this band has musically evolved since your days as a moniker?

V: I think we’ve all been working on our sound individually to have good tones at the source so that when we all play at once we have a more distinct and mature sound.

Any plans to hit the road?

V: No plans to go any farther than San Fransico or San Diego because we all have jobs to work and rent to pay right now. We do want to figure out how to set up some Hi quality Live Sessions that people could watch from anywhere until we can figure out how to get a national tour together.

What else is happening next in Higuera’s world?

V: Recording and way too many shows in LA. There’s a lot more secret plans to be made.
