INTERVIEW: Fighting Caravans

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks for having us! Great thankyou, we’ve been very busy putting the final preperations in for the release and the tour but all is well in the land of FC.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Blue Heart Motel”?

Blue Heart Motel is basically metaphoric of a love lost.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The opening lyric ‘you got closer’ just came out whilst jamming and ‘the Blue Heart Motel’ is a metaphor that’d been kicking around for a while so combining the two seemed like as good a concept as anything to base a song on.

How was the film experience?

Despite the fact we were all terribly hung over and it turned out to be a hell of a long day, the shoot was a lot of fun. It was very DIY, we built the set, filmed and edited it all ourselves so we were able to make it exactly how we wanted. Without giving too much away, the video features Josh’s Dad, a mannequin and an alien. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it!

Why naming the new material after this track in particular?

Blue Heart Motel is the A-side.

How was the recording and writing process?

We had been working on and developing ‘The Blue Heart Motel’ for a while, playing it in our live set and contantly tweaking bits here and there. We wanted to hold off the recording process until it was absolutely perfect . The recording itself was a blast, we had the opportunity to work with some great musicians and we were able to experiment with different sounds and ideas.

What was it like to work with Alex Greaves and how did that relationship develop?

Absolutely awful… Joking of course, Greaves was amazing – It was great to see his ideas for the tracks and he helped to develop them in stellar fashion, he really seemed to be on the same page and did a great job to capture the sound we were going for.  It was that much fun, we’ve decided to do it all again with him for the EP in september, this time at The Nave in Leeds.

How much did he get to influence the album?

Greaves had a lot of ideas that we had not thought of, extra parts we could include, parts to emphasise and bits we could take out etc. I think his main influence was the overall sound of the record, he allowed us to experiment with a lot of different pedals and recording techniques, which for us, absolutely completed it.

Did any film get to inspire the songs and lyrics on this record?

I know Dan takes a lot of inspiration from the arts and literature and draws upon a viariety of differernt influences, if you listen closely you may hear a few lines from ‘The Grand budapest hotel’.

How would this album showcase a different and matured side of the band?

Compared to our previous EP and recordings, this record shows how we are in the midst of developing our sound and toying with new ideas. We really wanted to think outside the box and try new things, in order to push ourselves further we felt we needed to get out of our comfort zone.

Any plans to hit the road?

Our tour to support the release of the single kicks off on Sunday at Liverpool Sound City, which we cannot wait for! We will be travelling up, down and around the country throughout the course of June, so keep em’ peeled!

What else is happening next in Fighting Caravans’ world?

We just finished recording the video for the B-side ‘In Sicily’ Which again was a hell of a lot of fun. We’ve got some amazing shows lined up throughout the summer with a few festival appearances and plans have been finalised for recording the EP in september. In the meantime, It time to get back to the grind and crack on with some writing.
