INTERVIEW: Parker Harrison
Hi Parker, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Been great! Busy getting this latest album wrapped up, but it’s all finished and I’m very excited about getting it out to the world.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Love Changes Everything”?
This has always been one of my favorite songs from the 80’s, the biggest hit by Climie/Fisher. I wanted to remake it in my own style, with my own stamp. I had the assistance of a great producer, Greg Bieck in Nashville.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Well, it’s a cover tune so I can’t claim ownership, but I love the message and the style of it!
Any plans to release a video for the single or any other track on this record?
No plans at this time for a video. I’m gauging public response first.
The single comes off your new material Clear Conscience – what’s the story behind the title?
To me, one of the highest things a person can achieve is a clear conscience. Very few of us can do this. The process of writing and producing these songs was very therapeutic and cathartic for me, personally. We’re all in pursuit of a cleaar conscience, we all just go about it in different ways.
How was the recording and writing process?
Well, it took longer than I ever could have imagined! The writing itself comes fairly quickly, but the production and refining process can really drag out into the better part of a year. But again, as I’ve said, it was therapeutic for me, I enjoyed it. I’d like to give a shout out to my other producer, Greg Giacona in Houston, TX. He was a big help in getting this project completed, taking some of the Nashville tracks and further shaping them and getting them ready for this release.
Why taking so long on releasing this material?
The production process is very time-consuming when aiming for close to perfection. It’s sometimes hard to let go and say, “it’s done” but I think we reached a place where I can feel good finally about the finished state of the project at this time.
Having been influence by a wide range of music styles – did you focus on any in particular for this record or went and play with different sounds?
I’m a child of the ’80s but I’m a huge fan of blue-eyed soul music of the ‘60s and ‘70s mainly, along with ‘80s pop, so those sounds were the main focus of this first release. Who knows where I’ll go next, but I wanted to pay tribute to my biggest influences from those periods.
What real and personal events get to inspire the songs and lyrics on this record?
“What Are We Fighting For” is my comment on the unfortunate costs of war. “Road to Nowhere” is a reaction to my experiences with people heading down the wrong road, making the wrong choices in life.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not at this time. Again, we’ll see what the reaction is to my first EP release, then go from there.
What else is happening next in Parker Harrison’s world?
We’re working on the second EP, “Clear Conscience: Part 2” to be released in the next few months. Beyond that, I may explore doing a cover album of some more of my favorites from the past, but again, with my new twists applied! Thanks for the opportunity to share these thoughts with VENTS!
