INTERVIEW: Chris Murphy
How would you classify your music?
Indie-rock influenced by Folk, Country, Jazz and World music…
Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?
Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, The Velvet Underground, Ry Cooder, David Lindley…
What do you want fans to take from your music?
Soul, grace, despair, euphoria, sexuality, drama.
Can you tell us a bit about your latest album? When will it be released and how does it differ from your previous work?
SURFACE TO AIR is collection of songs & instrumentals with more a songwriter feel than my other work, fully realized with a mostly full band and blending my love of folk, country rock, blues rock and funky violin playing.
What do you love and hate about the Music Business?
Negative: It’s a shame people don’t value music enough time pay for it… Positive: Great working with people like TINDERBOX to help promote the music!!
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
I live for the magical energy a live audience brings to a musical experience, a crowd of folks who paid money to listen to you definitely brings out a different consciousness in my performance…
Best gig ever:
Chris Whitley solo gig.
Is there a song on this latest CD that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?
Sailing the world alone… All came together on that track.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last few years? What made you decide to come back into the music business?
I’ve been a professional working musician for the last 27 years, (consistently doing about 200 shows a year) I’ve have never done anything else (and I’m not qualified to do anything else) and I feel like I’m just getting it together as a fully formed artistic identity in the last few years!!
If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, get drunk with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
So tell us what’s next?
More gigs, more recording, and would love to go to Europe!!
