INTERVIEW: Melanie Taylor

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Inta My Heart”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The original producer (Troy “R8DIO” Johnson) for the song and I were just playing around with different sounds one day, and were talking about music legends that inspire us because that’s what we would do a lot to get into the writing zone at sessions for my music.  Michael Jackson has always been my idol so I was probably talking about him, and R8DIO just starting playing the keys part of the song that reminded me a lot of more early Michael stuff so I immediately resonated with it. I just started singing the hook “cuz your tryna get inta my heart” out loud and R8DIO loved it so we just kept running with the idea.  The song morphed into this concept of being guarded and not looking for love, but of course love has it’s own timing and this guy is kind of turning her (my) world upside down. Not to be too lovey dovey but it actually is a pretty true depiction of what happened when I met my boyfriend, so it was easy to write about.

How was the film experience?

This video was actually one of the best things I’ve ever done. Not only was it the first video I shot for my new album coming out, but also everyone who worked on it with me was already, or is now a really good friend.  The eye candy in the video was also my choreographer and artistic director G Madison who has done a bunch of shows and videos for me before, and just got off touring with Mariah Carey! I told him I wanted to do something sexy and fun that was an expression of how I’ve matured as a woman. With his direction and everyone’s amazing work ethic it became a really purposeful and fun experience overall. I basically had done all the pre-production myself, so it was a looot of work leading up to the day, but the day itself was able to be the creative time that you want it to be.  Thank God the studio let us stay like… 5 hours over when we were supposed to leave because I tend to be a little over ambitious in my timeline goals.

What was it like to work with Unanimo and how did they come on board?

So I’ve actually never even met Unanimo in person! What’s funny is that the song we shot the video to, is actually a completely different version of song I did with Unanimo. The day before we were shooting, I got an email from the A&R of Clubstream Label Group in Sweden who said he loved the song, but wanted to get some producers he knew of to make a house version of it. I went ahead with shooting obviously, but I had to do some re-shoots to match the faster tempo of this now house/dance version (the original version will be on my upcoming album.)  Unanimo is located in Bosnia, and even the mixer was in London, so we all conversed through Skype and emails for our notes to make this track what it is!

As an entrepreneur, what’s your approach in music?

I’ve had some really amazing mentors who taught me the value in separating my artistic self from my personal self.  I definitely draw on my personal experiences for writing and love to be myself on stage, but I always try to keep in mind that my music may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and at the end of the day executives want to see numbers – which has nothing to do with who I am as a person.  Following that thought pattern has allowed me to be a little more aggressive in my career than I normally would be as a person.  Also I just really love music and can’t picture myself doing anything else, so I try and plan goals that will ultimately let me be more creative so that it supersedes any of the tasky stuff I may still have to do.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have a whole album already done that I am planning on releasing soon with a lot of accompanying music videos as well. I can’t wait to share.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We are planning for the end of July.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, but right now I am still finishing up some of the videos so everything is all ready to go before I start planning to promote on tour.

What else is happening next in Melanie Taylor’s world?

I have a song that’s going to be in a new Russell Peter’s comedy coming out soon called Ripped! And then I’ll also have another single and music video I am really excited about putting out before the album release.  So look out for that!
