What Is Cinema? Podcast Round Table Discussion on May 27 at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center‏

To celebrate the release of the fourth podcast episode, the team at “What is Cinema?” is having a FREE panel discussion on cultural inequity, arts institutions, and cinema, pertaining to Oak Cliff and Dallas at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center next Friday, May 27 with FREE food and FREE drinks for those 21+!

We have decided to move away from the concert series release party for each episode and move towards a socio-political dialogue with the neighborhood, inviting them to participate in monthly discussions on the way cinema creates a forum to discuss inequity, race, gender, sexuality, and cultural institutions. We will be inviting in Oak Cliff residents, artists, curators, directors, to participate in dialogue around city narratives and cultural equity.

The panel for this event includes four esteemed Oak Cliff residents/cultural workers that serve the community: Rafael Tamayo (Oak Cliff Cultural Center), Ariel Saldivar (Oak Cliff Foundation), Mylan Nguyen (The Safe Room), and Barak Epstein (Texas Theatre).

The “What Is Cinema?” Podcast is Dallas’ newest arts and culture podcast, brought to you by a grant from the City of Dallas and recorded at the legendary, Texas Theatre.

The podcast is presented by The Oak Cliff Cultural Center and hosted by film nerds Lee Escobedo (THRWD) and Patrick Patterson-Carrol (THRWD), with audio engineering by Christopher Kolleade (The Reunion Podcast) and branding by Arturo Torres (Illustrator of The New York Times bestseller, “The Rap Yearbook”). This month’s podcast episode special guest is filmmaker and video artist, Michael Morris, a newly minted Oak Cliff resident and co-founder of the film screening series, “Society of the Spectacle”.

The mission of this podcast is to explore the artistic framework of cinema, including historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts for analysis, as well as feature the many film professionals living and working in Dallas. Additionally, it is also our goal, through outreach, to engage the youth of Oak Cliff with discussions on cinema, expanding their artistic palette and connecting them to the amazing institutions, Texas Theatre and Oak Cliff Cultural Center existing right in their backyard.

Each monthly episode of the “What is Cinema?” Podcast will center around the film programming at Texas Theatre.

This event is free and open to the public!
