Thank you for having us! We’ve been busy, but really good. We’ve had a bit of a break since out last single ‘I’m not yours’ as we wanted to go away and write something we felt encompassed how we feel and how we want our music to sound, and we’re happy to say we’re back with just that (we hope..)!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Other Side”?
It’s been a long time coming as mentioned, but it’s been a kind of rehearsal room jam for a little while and Dave (singer) had started to form some really strong vocal parts. His lyrics are great and tell a story of not belonging somewhere and those that have hurt him and us in the past. We really wanted to try and show all we can do as a group so we spent a long time in the studio trying to get everything right- we were all so excited to finish that the writing process actually flowed pretty smoothly.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
As said before, it’s inspired by mostly Dave’s experiences. Dave and I (Duncan) finished the lyrics together and I think it’s more trying to capture a feeling we’ve all had instead of one particular moment- literally wanting to go back to how things were before. Everyone’s felt like they need to escape.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! We went on tour back in December and have had an awesome video made with some of the clips from that. We thought about doing a story-based video but we wanted to save that for some of the next singles. But don’t worry, you’ll get to see our pretty faces on YouTube (WHO COULD RESIST US EH?)
How was the recording and writing process?
Sorry, I keep answering questions early, ha ha! As said it was actually pretty smooth. It took a while but that was mainly due to other commitments and just having patience. If something wasn’t quite right, we’d leave if for a little while and think what we can do with it. We didn’t have to do it that much, but that’s because we all shared the vision of how we wanted to express the emotion by the song. We love collaborating together- that way we’re all happy..!
Does London play a role in your music?
Definitely. I think this song’s City is London. We’re all living here (3/4 of us born and raised here) and so many of our experiences have happened here. The London live scene can be cruel/ harsh at times but it definitely motivates us to work harder and improve. It’s such a huge place, and there’s so many pockets we’re yet to explore. It’s definitely our spiritual home and I think you can hear that in the music.
The single is part of a song series – why not releasing an EP or album instead?
I could make up that we have some super fancy marketing campaign, but it’s mainly that the other songs aren’t done yet! We were so happy with Other Side and felt we’d left it a while since our last single, so just wanted to get it out for people to enjoy. I think an EP can be a lot to digest as a listener, especially for a smaller band so gradually releasing allows our fans and friends to take it all in and be ready for some new music.
Would all songs deal with the same topic or they are standalone tracks?
They definitely have some similar themes and ideas, and that’s mainly down to Dave, who’s emotions the songs stem from- but they’re definitely all their own entity and you’ll hear that through the lyrics and production. Each track has an identity and that ebbs and flows through the 4 tracks.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’d love to! We’re hoping when more of the tracks have been release we’ll hear some nice things from some nice places so we can go and say hello. Watch this space!
What else is happening next in Pure Youth’s world?
I think we’re all going through lots of change at the moment. Oliver and Elliott are just finishing University and Dave and Duncan’s work is taking them to new places. We want to write about that and make more music. The future is pretty unknown but we don’t mind that, as long as we can make some music along the way (how cliché is that??).
