Award-winning American singer/songwriter, guitar player and playwright Benjamin Scheuer and photographer Riya Lerner are set to host a one night only gallery show featuring images from the pair’s limited edition 2014 artist book Between Two Spacesat the Leslie Lohman Prince St. Project Space in New York City on June 7. The event runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and admission is free. 50 percent of all proceeds from the show’s sales will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; sales of Between Two Spaces have raised more than $4000 for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society to date, with Scheuer and Lerner aiming to raise another $5000 with the event. The show will also include a screening of the Peter Baynton-directed video for Scheuer’s song “Cure” and will be sound-designed by Geoff Kraly, producer of Scheuer’s upcoming debut full-length record, Songs from THE LION, out June 3 via Paper Music/ADA.
Scheuer and Lerner’s collaboration began in January, 2011 when Scheuer was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkins Lymphoma. Lerner photographed him once a week for the following year, documenting his treatment. The book and gallery show include 27 black and white photographs alongside text selected from Benjamin’s journals.
Lerner notes, “these photographs explore a dichotomy of two transitional spaces: the clinical space and the everyday space. At first, the two seemed separate. One felt familiar: life as it was before the cancer. The other felt unfamiliar, sterile, determinate. I was interested in how the spaces interwove. How each space informed and influenced the other until it became difficult to decipher when one began and the other ended. Photographing Ben brushing his teeth or picking out a pair of shoes could be as significant as photographing him receiving chemotherapy.”
In addition to the gallery show, Scheuer will celebrate the release of Songs from THE LION with a performance at the Rubin Museum of Art’s “Naked Soul” ConcertSeries in New York City on June 10, with tickets available at http://bit.ly/1Sqadnu.
Songs from THE LION—available now for pre-order via iTunes and Amazon—features music from Scheuer’s critically acclaimed one-man musical memoir THE LION. Scheuer wrote Songs from THE LION as he was playing gigs around his hometown of New York City. “I was singing about my dad, who died when I was thirteen. Singing about a romantic relationship I was in that went well until it went bad. Singing about my diagnosis with, treatment for, and cure of advanced stage cancer.”
The record features performances from drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails) and bassist Chris Morrissey (Sara Bareilles), was engineered by Grammy Award-winner Pat Dillett (Sufjan Stevens, David Byrne, Nile Rodgers) and mixed in part by Kevin Killen (Peter Gabriel, U2, David Bowie).
THE LION has won numerous awards in both the U.S. and U.K., including the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, a 2015 Theatre World Award and the Off-West End Award for Best New Musical.
Best known for his work Off-Broadway and Off-West End, Scheuer, hailed by the New York Times for his “reflective pop-folk songs with catchy choruses and just the occasional burst of angst,” has also toured with Mary Chapin Carpenter (who authored the liner notes for Songs from THE LION) and performed at venues including New York’s Lincoln Center and London’s Royal Albert Hall. Scheuer is also the first musical guest to have performed on “Charlie Rose.” The Peter Baynton-directed video for Scheuer’s “Weather the Storm” recently won the Public Choice Award for Best Music Video at the British Animation Awards; Scheuer has also won prizes for his two previous collaborations with Baynton on the videos for “Cookie-tin Banjo” and “THE LION.”
