INTERVIEW: The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Busy eating Baguettes and cured meats while touring Europe for the 1st time with Dr Dog and Xixa, really well thanks!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Don’t Make ´Em Like They Used To”?

Its about the quality and size of airplane seats compared to the good old days of 80’s air travel…ha ha! Basically just a glorification of things past like cars, music, and friends. Most of us have that feeling from time to time, that the world is becoming worse and worse, and we long for simpler days.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

It was written by Matts brother Ben Rogers, who is kindred soul of yesteryear so i imagine everything in his life would fuel a song like this.

How was the film experience?

Fascinating! we gave the film maker Christopher Mills carte Blanche and he ran with it in ways that tied in assimilation & imprisonment into an abstract world of perverse robots and fleeing souls.

How was the recording and writing process?

First we laid the Drums(Matt) and Bass(Shawn) live to tape, then invited 3 of the best soul singers we’ve ever met in Canada together to work me into a frenzy like a caged lion. Finally Matt took the goods  and ran them through his Lucas Film visionary brain and voila.

What role does The Black Keys play in your music?

The Black Keys stood out years ago to us simply for their very raw and saturated approach to recording music, and the haunted space that seemed to hang off Dan’s aching vocals in the early days.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Sure does, we’ve got a new record about 2/3’s done. we spent the majority of the winter months in a wonderful space that was Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, and their team allowed us to play with room tones we’ve never had at our disposal before.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I think we plan on having this puppy out Jan 2017.

Would you be diving into other different styles or would you have finally found your sound?

Its hard to say what the end result will be. We set out to make it far more live and raw than our live outing, and just let the drums be their nasty selves if they so’ll just have to wait.

Any plans to hit the road?

we will be touring Canada all summer playing festivals and most likely we’ll be returning to europe late fall.

What else is happening next in The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer’s world?

Matts probably going to invest in an old hat box for all his travels. If anyone has an Auntie thats’ selling one, please let us know.
