Portland, Oregon-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist LIDA HUSIK and Danish cellist and composer SOMA ALLPASS will release their first EP together, FUTURE GHOSTS OF AMERICA on August 1, 2016 through HusikMusik.
The four-track EP fuses the pair’s ethereal, experimental pop melodies built on cello, acoustic guitar and piano with soulful electronic textures. The collaboration began with an email Husik received from Allpass over ten years ago.
“I thought her voice and cello playing were beautiful and I knew we would sound good together,” says Husik. “I had a few songs I was working on, and she came to DC from Denmark where we rehearsed for a couple of days and then Hugh McElroy recorded us at his Swim-Two-Birds studio – in one day. We played three songs live on acoustic guitar and cello, and then both sung vocal leads and harmonies.”
Husik revisited the songs as she relocated from DC to San Francisco to Portland. Along the way, she collaborated with various producers and musicians in each city and ultimately completed the recordings earlier this year.
“The song “Future Ghosts of America” is based on a dystopian movie I wrote and directed in my head one night about the weather reporters of the future,” Husik reveals. And while “FGA” looks to the frightening future, “Buster” tries to escape to the romantic sepia-toned past from a hot, annoying day in modern LA.
“Throughout this process I knew I wanted to do remixes. “And Let the Rain” is a remix of an unreleased song of mine, “Top of the World’. The inspiration was a book called ‘Act One’ by the screenwriter Moss Hart.
Husik is currently at work on a full-length album and Allpass will release a new project on May 13th as part of the duo Soma & Lil. More information can be found at www.somandlil.com.
