INTERVIEW: Fallen to Flux

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Bjorn: Fantastic, thank you! It’s been an exciting couple of weeks since the release of Anchored, we just played a show in Sheffield; we can’t complain!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Anchored”?

Oli: We wanted to put out a real statement with our first single. We chose something powerful that shows similarities with our older records, but kind of introduces some of the new things that we’re doing on this album!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Oli: The song is about how intimidating it can feel when you’re finally able to make decisions that shape the rest of your life. When we left uni, we could choose to do whatever we liked with our lives… it seems great, but it can be scary to embrace that responsibility! Anchored has the message that as long as you get the wheels in motion, you’ll end up going somewhere good!

Any plans to release a video for the single or any other track on this record?

Bjorn: Well there is a lyric video out there already, but no, there won’t be a performance video for Anchored. There will be more singles though and all of them have videos! Rest assured that this is just the warm-up…

The single comes off your new material Transitions – what’s the story behind the title?

Oli: The lyrics on this record are all inspired by perspective shifting moments that we experience as we go through life. The first moment like this was the one that inspired the album opener, when I had my world view completely changed by seeing that the life that is often encouraged… school, uni, high-paying job… is not enough to bring you true happiness. These transitions in our beliefs inspired the theme of the record, and the name!

How was the recording and writing process?

Bjorn: We lived together and did nothing but writing and recording for a couple months – we had a great time. It also let us grow closer together and learn from each other. That’s why the songs on Transitions contain so many surprises and different ideas, it really dwarfs our old EPs.

What life and other type of transitions get to inspire the songs and lyrics on this record?

Oli: As well as that realisation about a typical path to life, the songs deal with things like realising that living your life for the sole purpose of pleasing someone else won’t keep you sane and even the thought that it will take a perspective shift from others to slow the damage we’re doing to our world.

Would you call this a departure from your previous material or more like a follow up?

Bjorn: It’s certainly a progression towards the band we always wanted to be. Piece by Piece (our first EP) showcased all our hardrock and metal influences, with FTOLI (From the Outside, Looking In, our second EP) we branched out a little bit towards more catchy songs like Living with the Pain. “Disenchanted”, the main single of FTOLI was a milestone for us in terms of expression and emotion.

Every song on Transitions is aimed at taking you on a journey like Disenchanted did. We don’t want to “just” write a cool rock song, we want tell you a story and instil hope for a better future in you! The new tracks are much more developed and thought-out than the old ones (especially because we spent months doing nothing else but writing these tracks). Keeping that all in mind, I see it as a follow-up, but the differences between the old and new material are massive, so you might disagree.

Any plans to hit the road?

Bjorn: We actually just announced a June Tour! We’re psyched to be touring with Once More Round, here are the dates:

What else is happening next in Fallen To Flux’s world?
