PREMIERE: Velo Release New Music Video For “Some Ideas”

Kicking off another week full of awesome news and premieres, we have teamed up with Austin based act Velo for the premiere of their stunning and colorful video for “Some Ideas”, directed by Steven Hendrix.

An indie-rock band from Austin, Texas, Velo writes melodic pop tunes set adrift in a psychedelic sea of strings, horns, and synths. Founded in late 2014, they are already making waves in the Austin music scene and elsewhere, playing with bands such as White Denim and Mother Falcon, and playing at CMJ 2015. They are currently working on a seasonally themed concept record with producer Keith Gary (Coldplay, Rufus Wainwright), which is being slated for release in May 2016.

Recently we also sat down with vocalist/guitarist Ofer Shouval to talk more about the single, video, new album and more.

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Ya know, livin’.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Some Ideas”?

It’s one I’m really proud of personally, and I think everyone in the band enjoys playing it.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I wrote it around the time that my old band was falling apart. It’s about the general feeling that many of us have that we need to follow our dreams even though they’re strange, half remembered, and ethereal. It’s about driving ahead despite not really knowing where your headed.

How was the film experience?

Generally chilled out, though long. I remember packing up a pickup truck with equipment at 430am. We got to shoot in a student housing coop basement though, which was awesome because the song is about the people who live in those kinds of places.

How was the recording and writing process?

Like a dream, I can’t remember the details anymore. Just a general warm fuzzy feeling.

What was it like to work with Keith Gary and how did that relationship develop?

I met him a few years back through some mutual friends. I love working with him because he believes in me enough to give me the freedom to do what I want, yet he steers me in a positive direction without me being totally aware of it.

How much did he get to influence the album?

Immensely. He makes all the little decisions correctly so I can see the big picture clearly. Then during the mixing process we moved together towards what felt right.

Does Texas plays a role in your sound?

The song is about the people who I’ve been lucky enough to meet in the vibrant music and art scene that’s popped up around the student housing coops near UT Austin. It’s about a subculture where young people get to make exciting plans before reality sets in. Texas as a whole suffers, I think, suffers from a lack of this kind of thing, which is what makes oases like this one all the more essential.

How’s your new album coming along?

We’re almost done!

I understand this would be a concept album – what’s the theme?

The concept is in the way we created it. We wrote, arranged. and recorded 3 songs in every season of 2015, so the album will be comprised of 4 different movements, one for each season. We couldn’t help but immerse ourselves in the energy around us, and I think it got captured in the way each section of the album feels. For example, ‘Some Ideas’ is the first track of ‘winter’ the first movement, and for me it bursts with potential energy. Nothing has been determined, everything feels possible. But if you listen to some of the songs off of ‘fall’ for instance, they feel much more mature and reflective, mournful at times. Like a tree with only a few leaves left on its limbs.

Where did you find the inspiration for the story and music?

Within myself, my friends, and the world around me.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

July 2nd, probably.
