Vancouver-based pop singer Kaylee Johnston is set to release her infectious new self-titled EP on June 3, available on select music services including iTunes and Spotify. That same night, the energetic performer will celebrate the release with a show at The Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver. Tickets can be purchased here.
Mixed by Orlando Vitto (Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland and Britney Spears), the EP’s first single, “Getting Over You,” hit Canadian airwaves April 15. The accompanying video premiered exclusively on Exclaim! and amplifies the song’s message of self-empowerment. Watch the video here.
“The EP is really about a break up and learning how to be alone and happy afterwards. The heartbreak, the denial, the mistakes, being lonely and then finally, triumph.” says Johnston. “I tried to not only write about the situations I found myself in, but what I learned through them. At the time, I was writing mostly for myself, anthems to get me through the constant changes. Once we started putting the album together and I saw the story the songs were telling, something about it felt complete… like I’d just successfully written a chapter of my life.”
Produced by SA Trackworks, Kaylee Johnston is a mesmerizing example of Johnston’s eclectic sound, blending her love of pop music and honest lyrics with hints of electronic synthesizers and beats. Tracks such as “Are You the One” and “Lonely” highlight Johnston’s powerful vocal range over catchy hooks. “Let’s Pretend” demonstrates the emotional side of pop music with a gentle melody complimented by Johnston’s soft, smooth vocals as she croons about revisiting the past in order to move on to the future. The forthcoming second single off the EP, “Caught In The Thick,” opens with a commanding beat and features Johnston’s vulnerable side with lyrics about the difficulties of moving on from the past.
Johnston has gained recognition as a promising, emerging talent on the Canadian music scene since securing a spot in the finals of the Canadian Radio Star songwriting competition as a young teen with her song “Arms Around Me.” Songs from her debut EP Streetlight, produced by Jeff Dawson (Daniel Powter) received national radio play and were featured on national television shows including CTV/TeenNick’s Degrassi: The Next Generation. A passionate performer, Johnston has opened for Dragonette and Ace of Base, and shared the stage with Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianas Trench, One Republic and Joe Jonas. Johnston has written over 300 songs with influences ranging from her own experiences to the musical works of Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox and Heart.
