Up Close With “The Cheek Of Her”

Ryan: Band names or project names can be difficult to settle on. What is the story behind The Cheek Of Her?

Helen: Well I think it just came to me to literally describe what I was doing when I first started out gigging around London: singing tongue-in-cheek songs about bad boys! So literally the cheek of her for doing that!

Ryan: How long have you been playing music for?

Helen: I’ve always been musical, sang in choirs at school and dabbled with piano. I didn’t really pursue any original song writing and performing until around 6 years ago, as I wasn’t surrounded by like-minded people in bands when I was younger unfortunately.

Ryan: What does your song writing process look like?

Helen: Organic, definitely. I don’t think too much about it, usually start jamming about on the piano, humming, then words flow and I might ‘sit’ on a hook for a day a week or a month, or I might just write a whole song in an hour. It really depends, but I like it not to be forced.

Some reviewers of my music say the lyrics are witty and clever, but I have read reviews (I do read them, good and bad!) which say that they are simple. I’d agree with both of those opinions really, I like to be to the point, but sonics and flow of the lyrics with melodies are hyper important to me when writing.

Ryan: Where do you gather inspiration from?

Helen: Everyday life, guys that annoy me, my feelings and all the crazy stuff that goes on in my head highlighted and brought to life!

Ryan: Give the chance, is there anyone that you would like to collaborate with on a future project?

Helen: Totally open-minded about that actually. I think it would be fun to do something with a Rap Artist, or a male singer as I like contrasts. So anyone out there interested, do get in touch!

Ryan: Your song 9 Lives is currently being promoted as the EP single. What made you choose this particular track to showcase?

Helen: That’s right. I chose “9 Lives” as the lead Single because I feel it’s the most accessible, hooky and dramatic, so may have the most impact. I think it’s one of the strongest anthemic songs I’ve written.

Ryan: Speaking of Ep, when can we expect to see the entire album?

Helen: Well I have already released a full 12 track album “Adult Angst Anonymous” in 2014, but I have no immediate plans to write, and record another at present. I’m just going to see how Black Heart Mantra the EP is received and go from there! When you’re an independent Artist in can take a very long time to get an album ready, so Eps and Singles are a little more manageable, and keep things ticking over.

Ryan: At this point in your musical career, what are some of your most memorable moments?

Helen: Having the courage to start the journey, gigging live for the first time with a full band, and getting lots of national radio play all over Europe!

Ryan: Do you have any advice for an independent artist looking to make their own Ep?

Helen: Write songs and make demos before you go into the studio really helps, find a good Producer who you get on with, trust and gets what you want to achieve, and just go for it. Let yourself be as creative as you want to be. Nothing is ‘wrong’. Have fun.

Ryan: How would you describe your music to someone that has not heard your album yet?

Helen: Raw, emotive, dark-pop, gothic, real, passionate, anthemic!

Ryan: Does your album have a specific theme that runs through it?

Helen: Definitely, although I don’t always realize it at the time of writing. Eps and Albums are sometimes like diary-entries for me, revealing a snapshot of what’s going on in my own life and head through a song, so they are personal, which helps to make the performance of them heartfelt and sincere.

So in a nutshell themes that run through the EP Black Heart Mantra are: living for the moment; love and relationships; being real and true to yourself and protecting your heart, as who has time for game playing?!

Ryan: Lastly, and thank you for your time. Do you have any news that you would like to share with your fans?

Helen: A pleasure, thank you 🙂 Yes, I just want to thank them for their continued support over the years, and let everyone know that Black Heart Mantra EP by The Cheek of Her is available to pre-order now on iTunes and officially released on the 2nd May, 2016!
