Oscar-Winner Alexandre Desplat to be honored guest at Hollywood in Vienna 2016‏

Austrian born composer Max Steiner (“Gone With The Wind”) is one of the founders of film music as we know it today. He scored over 300 movies and was nominated for 24 Academy Awards, winning three. Each year, the City of Vienna presents the “Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award” during the annual Hollywood in Vienna gala to one of the world’s most renowned film music composers. The award is meant to be a symbol of recognition for exceptional achievements in the art of film music. Hollywood in Vienna CEO and Founder Sandra Tomek announced today that Alexandre Desplat will receive the 2016 Max Steiner award. The ninth annual film music gala, Hollywood in Vienna, will take place October 14th, 2016 at the historic Concert Hall (Konzerthaus) in Vienna, Austria.

“His elegant compositions and his rare versatility make Alexandre Desplat one of the most sought-after composers of our time”, says Tomek. “He has a unique gift to always find a nuanced emotional tone that captures the audience and supports the film, which he has proven over and over again.”

Academy Award Winner Alexandre, with over a hundred scores and numerous awards to his credit, is one of the most-worthy heirs to the French film scoring masters. Inspired by the works of Maurice Jarre, Bernard Herrmann, Nino Rota and Georges Delerue, he expressed his desire to compose for film early on, but really made his decision after listening to John Williams.

“In my early teens, I started collecting soundtrack albums. Soon I knew who was who – from [Max] Steiner and [Franz] Waxman to more recent composers like Maurice Jarre and Georges Delerue. I learnt so much from them”, said Alexandre Desplat in a 2014 BBC interview.

In 2015 Alexandre Desplat received an Academy Award for “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, in addition he received two BAFTA Awards, a Golden Globe and two Grammy Awards, to list just a few of his numerous awards. Desplat has worked on a variety of Hollywood films, including independent and commercial successes like “The Queen”, “The King’s Speech”, “Moonrise Kingdom”, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “The Imitation Game”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and 2”. His 2016 movies include “Alone in Berlin”, “The Secret Life of Pets”, “Florence Foster Jenkins”, “The Light Between Oceans” and the upcoming “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.

Alexandre Desplat served as a jury member at the Festival de Cannes and became the first composer President of the Jury at the Mostra di Venezia.

His work will be performed by the world-class ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Keith Lockhart, chief conductor of the Boston Pops.
