Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Been splendid thank you! Been good to finish up some new tunes and get them out there!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Logic”?
Logic is the first Caralis track to feature the new 4 member line up in some shape or form…with different members playing at different points in the track. The song evolved from the piano riff which I just had going round and round in my head so had to get it down! It evolved in to quite a pretty little thing, with John working his production magic.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Yeah, as a matter of fact there was! The verse lyrics were written after Ireland voted yes to gay marriage. I found it a welcome change to hear a positive story in the news and was inspired to reference this – hence “the logic survived”. The song then developed to be an ode to individuality.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, it’s just be released and is online on our YouTube channel here:
Why naming the album after this track in particular?
We felt it would be good to name the EP after Logic as that track is the culmination of all the music we’ve made so far, and the most complete Caralis statement to date.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process was me having a few ideas and singing them into my phone…just humming the piano loop and tapping the drum beat out on my knees! I then took it to John (production and live drums) in the studio and we recorded most of it in one day.
We then took that to Phil (keys) & Amit (guitar/samples) and for them to add more textures and parts too. Those two really got to come in to their own during the dark end section and add something different.
How has the band’s previous musical backgrounds have influence this new project?
We all come from very different music backgrounds, which creates a great melting pot when we get together. This is a fairly new project for us and is a ‘band’ in the loosest sense. I think the most interesting thing is that because we all do – or have done – other music stuff, then we use Caralis as a vehicle to try something completely different. There’s no restriction for us and hopefully what we produce may surprise some people who know us.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Lyrically there’s usually one small theme or event that then develops in to the song. I mentioned about Logic earlier. But it could be something as small as a random meeting with someone you used to know (for example) no set rules! But inspiration in general I find often comes from discovering new music that reinvigorates my passion and just propels me to come up with something new that we can get our teeth into.
Any plans to hit the road?
We have an EP Launch gig at The Half Moon, London on Thurs 19th May. Then we’ll hopefully play more shows later in the year.
What else is happening next in Caralis’ world?
We all have a million things happening, and hopefully we can channel that in to the next set of recordings and live shows.
