INTERVIEW: The Split Seconds

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Goddamned amazing.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cutting Out”?

This song is about having balls and grit and making the conscious choice to push forward into uncertainty to break out of a rut, because possible failure is better than stagnation

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

It was written after Drew’s last band fell apart and he was living back in his parent’s basement struggling to find work.  And he was determined to get the hell out of there.

How was the film experience?

We just shot the video in about 3 hours at Pie Shop Studios and the alley behind Rock and Roll Hotel in DC.  Quick and dirty.

The single comes off your new self-titled album – why did you choose to name the album after the band instead of coming up with some fancy name? Is it because this in some way, a very personal record?

Yes it is a very personal record.  I suppose that is part of why we wanted to keep it self titled.  One fewer layer between the songs and the listener.  But really we just wanted to come out with a simple and bold statement to announce ourselves.  it’s also a bit of an homage to The Clash’s first self-titled record.

How was the recording and writing process?

The songs took a lot of writing and rewriting.  it was a repeating process of coming up with a lot of new ideas and then trimming them down to keep the songs simple and focused.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Each song has a different inspiration, but the major theme running through the record is the struggle between idealism and realism.  Trying to live with integrity without being a sucker.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re mostly focused on DC for now.. It’s a town with punk rock in its DNA.. But we’re looking at hitting the northeast and midwest this fall.

What else is happening next in The Split Seconds’ world?

Alsays writing new stuff and looking for ways to take our music and shows to the next level.  We’re just getting started!
