After making waves with her first self-released debut album Sun & Mirrors in 2013, Dallas-based indie pop artist Kaela Sinclair garnered the attention of international record label and music agency DEFDISCO, ultimately signing with the label in August 2015. The first U.S. artist to sign with DEFDISCO, Sinclair set off on her first U.K. tour hitting tour dates in the U.K. and Scotland before heading back into the studio to work on her second set of songs with acclaimed producer McKenzie Smith (Regina Spektor, St. Vincent, Midlake). The highly anticipated follow-up album titled Second Skin will be released on DEFDISCO this fall. “Golden,” the first single off of the once again showcases her accomplished compositional skill, lush vocals, and intelligent lyrics all of which have proven Sinclair to be a sultry and expressive songwriter, far accomplished beyond her years. Additional details to be announced.
“When I saw Kaela perform at last year’s Record Store Day at Josey Records I was immediately captivated by her voice and presence on stage,” said Cliff Simms, the Dallas-based DEFDISCO VP of Creative Services who signed Sinclair to the label. “She performed for a few of us over at our DEFDISCO U.K. office last summer and it was clear that she had something special.”
After garnering national and regional attention from Paste with her debut release Sun & Mirrors in 2013, Sinclair was voted as one of Texas Music Magazine‘s “Top Ten Singer-Songwriters to watch,” who described her as “a gifted new writer with some of the qualities that made St. Vincent so popular.” Sinclair also went viral this January with an iPhone Gridplay cover of SOHN’s track “Artifice” after it was picked up by Buzzfeed. Attracting over 200K views, 70K from just one weekend, the cover gained a seal of approval from SOHN himself and critically-acclaimed blog Gorilla vs. Bear.
A recent announcement by M83 front man Anthony Gonzalez on Twitter proclaimed Sinclair had joined the internationally touring synth-pop group as a vocalist/keyboardist, beating out hundreds of other applicants. Submitting two audition videos was all it took for Gonzalez to realize that Sinclair was the missing piece for their current world tour to promote Junk, the group’s new album out April 8. The announcement grabbed the attention of local and national critics, with a shout out by Pitchfork.
“…when I saw @kaelasinclair it was obvious she would be perfect!” exclaimed Gonzalez on Twitter March 4. “I think @kaelasinclair is amazing and I can’t wait for you to meet her.”
As the singer preps for the release of her follow-up album, she’s wowing crowds across the world with her impressive vocals, even singing lead on M83‘s new song “Oblivion.” On her second date of the tour, Sinclair blew the roof off of a sold-out show at the Bomb Factory in her hometown of Dallas Fort-Worth, solidifying her deserving spot in the synth-pop group as vocalist/keyboardist.
