INTERVIEW: The Soft Underground

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great, thanks for having us!

Can you talk to us more about your single “Satellite”?

It wasn’t really our intention to release “Satellite” as a single, but rather a small teaser before the album was released. We liked the idea of a mellow instrumental piece being the first song that people heard from the record, especially considering that we’re primarily a rock band.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The song was meant to be a part of a much larger piano piece written by our guitar player, Charlie Hickey. When he wrote the song, he said he just imagined people slow dancing under a bunch of Chinese lanterns.

Any plans to release a music video for this or any of the other singles on the record?

The current plan is to release “Untrue” as the next single, along with an accompanying music video.

The single comes off your new album Lost In Translation – what’s the story behind the title?

Usually, we name our songs based off of vibes that we feel when listening to them. Listening to “Satellite”, I literally just imagine satellites out in a field somewhere.

How was the recording and writing process?

There were definitely times during the recording of the album that we felt like we were in over our heads, but ultimately it was a great learning experience of what to do and what not to do in the future. The plan is to complete our next record in a more timely fashion.

What role does Smashing Pumpkins have played in your music?

The Smashing Pumpkins definitely helped shape our sound during the early songwriting process. “Siamese Dream” is a hugely influential album and Jimmy Chamberlin is my favorite drummer of all time.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Lyrically, I like to draw from personal experience, though songs like “Why Can’t I Sleep?” and “Right Between Her” are more story based.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the moment. We’re more focused on being a recording band. Though, we have had a lot of people asking where they could see us, so never say never.

What else is happening next in The Soft Underground’s world?

We’re hoping to release “Untrue” as the next single from Lost in Translation and then head to the studio late this summer to begin recording our second album.
