INTERVIEW: Damn The Witch Siren

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Fabulous.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “David Bowie”?

I wrote this song as an ode to Mr. Stardust a few weeks after he left Earth and shot up into the great ethereal blackness of the universe on to his next journey. David Bowie has always been one of my biggest influences and although his spirit is always with me while writing music, I wanted to carve out a little thank you to him in hopes that he might hear it light years away. Hence the yowling.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

My bandmate, Z Wolf, and I were driving back home from a show we played in Cleveland, listening to Bowie’s latest album, Blackstar. That album is seriously a masterpiece and we both had such a spiritual experience with it, picking up on tiny details about life and death in his lyrics and the overarching theme of Bowie transcending into space. We got home around 3 AM and a friend texted me that he had just passed. I couldn’t help but burst into tears. It felt like we lost a best friend/confidant/mentor. Just like everything he did, even his death was a piece of art.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We have definitely been contemplating it.

What role does David Bowie plays in your music?

Every role? Haha. But seriously, his artistry is just embedded into my soul. I first fell in love with him when I was just eight years old and ever since I have been influenced by his androgyny, fashion, his showmanship, the way he never gave any fucks about fitting into a genre and would write a funky soul album and then record an instrumental album…just everything. He was an artist through and through, he knew what he wanted, and he wasn’t afraid to be exactly whoever it was he wanted to be at the time.

How was the recording and writing process?

It’s always just a mess.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We actually just came out with a new album in October titled Back to Dreaming, which was our first full length and also our first time pressing vinyl. Other than that, you can expect us randomly releasing new singles throughout the year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No dates on the releases of the singles. We are just going to have a very fun spontaneous year when it comes to releasing new music.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely. We have a tour coming up in July where we will be playing around 15 dates and will be traveling for 20 days across the Midwest and the east coast. After that we plan on hitting up the west coast this fall.

What else is happening next in Damn The Witch Siren’s world?

Honestly, we are going to play this year by ear. Last year, we spent a lot of time recording, working on our live show and setup, and hanging out in our haunted house making art…So this year our main goal is to travel and play as many shows across America as we can.
