Hi J., welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’ve been good, really good! Crazy busy, lots of studio sessions and traveling… all good stuff!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “K11 (Right Now)”?
My latest single, “K11 (Right Now)” is a really interesting body of work. I say that because of the entire story behind the record. The story about how Roger and I came together to even explore the possibility of working together, to booking the studio two months out, having no idea what we were going to work on, what the working relationship would be like, or if anything would even come out of it. This record is also very special because it’s the first record that I’ve released that is 100% J. Cobb (no features yet)—I wanted to do that for my core supporters and for those who are just getting to know J. Cobb.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I think the whole journey of being an independent artist. “K11 (Right Now)” is what I see for myself and my career in one record. I would say this track is journey inspired.
Can you tell us more about the upcoming video?
I don’t want to give too much away but it’s happening and it’s gonna dope!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process was super natural. I came up with the hook in the studio after hearing a couple tracks and wrote the rest of it at the crib.
What was it like to work with Roger L. Goodman and how did that relationship develop?
Roger was really sick the whole time, so I don’t know what it’s like to work with Roger. Lol jK! No it was dope! Roger is an extremely talented producer and it was amazing working with him!
How would you say your family and their determination for having a better education have influence your music?
It has influenced my music in many ways, but I would say the biggest influence is being able to make music that covers the spectrum.
How has Detroit influenced your sound?
Growing up in Detroit has influenced my sound tremendously. From Motown to Shady Aftermath, Detroit has contributed a lot to music. Detroit music definitely plays a role in my style and sound.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material ‐ how’s that coming along?
Oh yea!!! You can definitely expect new material. The pipeline is filling up so we’re definitely going to keep the momentum going this year!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Release date is TBD. I usually come up with my titles after the project is completed so there’s no working title as of yet.
Any plans to hit the road?
Absolutely! We’re heading to SXSW for 2 shows and more performances will be announced soon!
What else is happening next in J. Cobb’s world?
Stay tuned for more music, more shows, and more news!
