Hi Savannah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Very well, thank you! It’s been an amazing feeling to release something that is so raw and honest, I’m really proud of it.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Naked”?
Naked is about my celebration of vulnerability as a strength, in a world where it is often seen as a weakness. It’s about freeing yourself of the need to be perfect and living your life authentically and unapologetically. I’m baring all, it’s emotional and empowering.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I’ve always been emotional, and I wanted to finally embrace that instead of feeling like it’s a weakness. Naked was born from a place of love and out of a need for liberation. Vulnerability, in my eyes, is the birth place for so much; empathy, creativity, love. Not having a safety net is scary but so freeing, and I need to live my life in the most authentic and courageous way, so I wanted to let myself know, and hopefully others too, that it’s okay to bare all, to be exactly who you are, and you don’t have to apologise. Let yourself feel the emotions that you feel!
How was the film experience?
Crazy! It was so much fun, the vibe was amazing on set, my mum made jerk chicken and rice & peas and everyone was taken care of! It felt so surreal to see something I wrote, something so close to my heart, take form as a video. From figuring out the concept with Émile, to choosing & styling outfits, to finally being in front of the camera, I really enjoyed every moment. It was a really small team and I couldn’t have done with any of them, so I’m so grateful that it turned out so beautifully.
How was the recording and writing process
I actually wrote Naked in the bath! The idea came to me and I started singing into my phone, I forgot about idea for a while and came back to it, releasing how much I loved it, how honest and liberating it was. I knew I had to record it so I took it straight to my guitarist Johann Ting, and when he put his music to it, it was born.
I recorded with The Confect and we recorded twice, I wanted the song to feel intimate and raw. I wanted people to feel it, and I wasn’t happy with the first version so we went in and I did it again, it was at night and the mood was right and I just zoned out and poured my heart into it, it was beautiful.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! I am always writing, and I’m always trying to find new ways to stretch and challenge myself to grow as an artist so I can promise that new material will be beautiful, and that I won’t rush or compromise on quality. I want to explore every aspect of my personality!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
None specifically in mind yet! But you will know when I do!
Any plans to hit the road?
Ah, I would love to. I’ll tour the world many times one day.
What else is happening next in Savannah Dumetz’s world?
I’m about to start rehearsals for a launch show I have on the 15th of April at The Social. It’s going to be so much fun! And of course, just more and more music. This year is really going to be about stretching myself and taking everything I do to new heights, I just to express myself in general. So whether that’s through music, or film, or fashion, painting, dancing, or a simply a beautiful conversation, I’m here for all of it! 2016 is going to be a beautiful year!
