On Friday afternoon, about 300 students packed out a large New York University assembly hall to hear Joey Bada$$ launch his “long and fruitful career as a lecturer.” One week later he will be speaking at Harvard, at the invitation of the university’s Black Men’s Forum.
At NYU, The 21-year-old hip hop artist and entrepreneur spoke to the students about his career that began at early the age of 15, sharing many invaluable lessons that he has learned along the way.In addition to giving history and context to Pro Era, the hip hop collective that he co-founded, Joey touched on his experiences as a young Black man trying to navigate the music industry while remaining independent and staying true to himself. He also gave the audience a taste of a new song. To close, Joey suggested that he looks to act in television and film this year as well as getting behind the camera. Following his lecture, Joey participated in a Q+A with the students, many of whom were aspiring artists seeking advice.
In addition to the lecture series, 2016 has already seen Joey featured in Calvin Klein’s international Spring 2016 campaign alongside the likes of Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, Kendall Jenner, and FKA Twigs. He was also listed among Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Princes and featured by Vogue Magazine during this month’s New York Fashion Week. With Coachella and Governor’s Ball performances coming shortly, 2016 is shaping up to be a banner year for the Brookly denizen. Joey is currently recording the follow up to his debut album, B4.DA.$$, which is in stores now. Today, he is letting a loosie fly from those recording sessions for his fans on Ebro’s Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music at 6pm EST. Check out photos from his first lecture and stay tuned for the new song, “Ready”, tonight.
