INTERVIEW: Atlanta Power Trio BAST

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We are doing great! Thanks for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Elephant”?

This song was our first real group collaboration. We each contributed to a section or the overall feel of the song, so it was very exciting for us.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

During the time we were writing Elephant, a couple of us had some life challenges and changes we knew needed to be made, but we were avoiding because change can be hard. Change was like the Elephant in the room for us at the time. Just this big, obvious, heavy decision we had to make but had been putting off for a while.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

We felt that Elephant was a strong track, and we really liked the feel and vibe of the song, and felt it was a good representation of what the band was evolving into.

The single comes off your new EP – any title in mind?

Elephant is the single and the EP title.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was great. We were able to record and produce ourselves in our own space. We didn’t really have a lot of time limitations you can run into when you pay by the day at a studio. It was much more of a relaxing process and we were able to have the time to try ideas and get things just right.

How has Atlanta have influence your music?

Atlanta is such an eclectic town. There are so many different cultures here it’s great to get a taste of different parts of the country and the world. I think we are all very open minded musically and have been influenced by some of the great live acts that come through town as well as some of the great bands we have been fortunate enough to perform with.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Inspiration is such a strange thing. It comes and it goes. Mostly the songs are inspired by current events happening in our lives or in the world. Some songs seem to just write themselves so quickly, while others need more time to develop. Sometimes we just let them marinate until the right moment hits, and we have the right inspiration to finish them.

Any plans to hit the road?

BAST has a few mini tours planned. We will be at the Cat vs. Owl showcase on March 17th in Austin during SXSW. We are very excited to perform in Austin. We are looking forward to meeting and listening to musicians from around the world.

What else is happening next in Bast’s world?

We are beginning to work on some concepts for a music video. We are kicking around a lot of ideas right now, so stay tuned to our website for more information.
