We’re good! It’s very cold in Toronto right now. We’re all huddled under a blanket as we type this.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Good Woman” (listen here)?
The record is about dreaming, but also about the different connotations of what dreaming means. So in the sense of “Good Woman” it’s about dreaming about an ideal woman that doesn’t exist.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Darius used to suffer from sleep paralysis when he was young. So he’s always been inspired by dreams – whether they’re euphoric or utterly terrifying.
Any plans to work on a video for the song?
Hopefully, within the next few months.
The single comes off your new album Sleeptalk – what’s the story behind the title?
Our bassist, Andrew, talks in his sleep constantly. So we recorded all the strange and hilarious things he was saying in his sleep. These recordings are scattered throughout the album.
How was the recording and writing process?
We recorded most of the album during the summer of 2015 in our own studio. It’s a very casual process: usually someone starts off with an idea and then we refine and shape the song over the course of a day or so.
Would all the songs deal with your fascination for sleeping and dreams?
This album was a concept album and we tried to tie all the songs to the theme of sleeping and dreaming in one way or another.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not right now. Hitting the road is a huge endeavour and we honestly just don’t have the time for it right now.
What else is happening next in The Smoking Bells’ world?
We’re already halfway done writing the second album! We’re not sure when it will be released, but maybe this year some time. Thank you!
