Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey VENTS! We are great, thanks! How are you? Thanks for featuring us!
Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨When We Were Young¨?
Sure. I actually came up with the song when I (Adam, lead singer) was visiting my in-laws in Vancouver. As a general rule, song writing is a mysterious process. You never know when a melody or idea is gonna hit you. I was coming back from Granvile Island, which is a local market- really cool place- when the chorus melody suddenly popped into my head: “Oh when we were young; oh, we could not fight it. Our lives had just begun- when we were young; when we were young”. I loved the way the melody sounded, and thought the lyrics were cool. I think I was thinking about youth and rebellion- how you feel so strongly about certain injustices when you’re a kid, but you can’t really do anything about them. I imagined myself standing up against a powerful leader or a corrupt government- the frustration when you know you won’t win, but say screw it and oppose them anyway. That’s what it was for me
Why was the album named after this track in particular?
Since this is our fifth album, it seemed fitting that the album would be a type of personal retrospective for us- looking back on how far we’ve come in our lives and remembering where we came from. Because we’ve been together as a band for about ten years- that sounds like a long time- we’ve come to know each other incredibly well and to bond through the magical art of music, performance, and composition. We’re adults now, but the process of writing music together and creating taps into the inner kid in all of us. I think we felt that we wanted to remember things on this album- to go forward by looking backwards- remembering how we felt about the world, who our girlfriends were, who our parents were, what the world meant to us, etc. So we called it “When We Were Young”. Not that we aren’t still young- you’re always both young and old. Just felt important to connect the “now” with the “then”.
How was the recording and writing process?
Good! We recorded this track with Mike Watts at Vudu Studios in Long Island. Mike and his team of engineers are friggin’ awesome! Very professional, courteous- really understand music and paid a lot of attention to what we were going for. You know, when you write music and record it, you go into the Bat Cave of your personality- basically live in an interior world for weeks at a time. So it’s nice to do that with people who get what you’re going for and appreciate your craft!
What things of your childhood get to inspire the songs and lyrics on this record?
Probably feelings of intense frustration, to be honest. Conflicts with mom and dad. Fights. Times where we didn’t feel like we fit in or could make real changes in the world. So much art stems from that frustration- from the pain of knowing that the world could be better if people would listen, care, connect, take note. The funny thing about a lot of good art is that it sounds beautiful and striking, but it often emerges from real pain or frustration- unfulfilled wishes and dreams.
Any plans to hit the road?
Totally! We are psyched to head back on tour once the album hits April 23rd. We have headlining dates in New York, Boston, DC, Philly, etc. coming up. We are stoked! Gotta share the love!
What else is happening next in The Energy´s world?
Oh man….. too much! We want to take the next few months to really appreciate this creation and share it with all our fans. We’ve had some great success with licensing songs for MTV, ESPN, NBC, A&E, and lots of other networks- have had some really good radio exposure and touring with big nationals. More of that, we hope! And who knows? The sky is the limit- that’s not cliché, is it? J
