INTERVIEW: Chrystyna Marie

With her impressive EP Loaded Gun, Chrystyna Marie showcases her beautiful vocals and song writing skills. A mix of different genres, Chrystyna wears her influences on her sleeve and celebrates what she has learned about writing emotionally charged songs. Loaded Gun is a great preview of exciting things to come.

RYAN: The music found on Loaded Gun sounds too professional and mature to come from a new musician in the industry. How long have you been writing music, and can you tell us a bit about your journey to reach this point?

CHRYSTYNA: I’ve had ideas and expressions, bits and pieces, but before my EP, I had never written a full-fledged song. It was a difficult process because I wanted it to be about my life and my personal stories. Digging back into the archives of life was a pretty deep experience.

I’ve always wanted to write my own stuff but being with independent labels for the longest time, other people would write everything for me and I never had a say. I finally decided after my last label experience that if I want to sing what I want, I need to go it alone, in the genre I want, and it had to be about my life, otherwise I couldn’t genuinely portray the emotions of a song. I wanted people to know me and learn and grow with me through my songs.

RYAN: To me the EP Loaded Gun has some very unique sounding songs. How would you describe this EP to anyone that has not heard it before?

CHRYSTYNA: A mix of pop/rock/blues with blues being the base structure. It has a sort of black keys feel with Lana Del Rey production.

RYAN: How long did it take to create this album, and can we expect a full length album in 2016?

CHRYSTYNA: The full process, production, recording, mixing and mastering was 3 weeks. I’m currently writing songs and hope to release a full album at the end of this year.

RYAN: Who and what inspired you to create this EP?

CHRYSTYNA: My boyfriend is the one who actually gave me the courage to go it on my own. I’ve always talked about it but, if things went wrong the only person to blame would be myself. You always have those doubts. What if people don’t like it? What if I’m wasting my time? What if I’m not as good as I think I am? I knew I’d wonder what could’ve been if I didn’t try.

RYAN: Is there any musician that you would like to collaborate with if you were given the chance to?

CHRYSTYNA: My idols have almost all passed on. I would love to do something with Lady GaGa or Christina Aguilera.

RYAN: At this point in your musical career, what are some of your most memorable moments?

CHRYSTYNA: Working with wonderful producer Bill Bell and listening to the final mix of my EP for the first time.

RYAN: Do you have any advice to give any musicians looking to create their own EP?

CHRYSTYNA: Never give up, even if everyone doubts you. I would also add, don’t disrespect yourself to get ahead.

RYAN: Your vocals are easily the star player of every song, are there any instruments that you play on top of being a great singer?

CHRYSTYNA: Thank you so much! I play trombone and have played since I was 10. I can play basic piano, I took lessons when I was younger but I never got seriously into it. Right now, I am learning guitar.

RYAN: I personally thought the final track The Tower was the best song on the album. Do you have any personal favorites and why?

CHRYSTYNA: They all have a very special meaning to me. I hold Loaded Gun and Down The Road as two defining songs out of the four. Loaded Gun was about a moment I took charge of my own life, finally put myself first and got out of a bad situation rather than be stuck in it for life. Down The Road was about my childhood and overcoming personal demons.

RYAN: What does an average week look like for you these days when it comes to working in the music industry?

CHRYSTYNA: Right now I’m in the process of choosing which concept ideas I want to focus on and building on them for the full album. In a few weeks, I will be in the studio again. I am also planning the EP tour at the moment as well. Once the studio process starts it will be much busier with production and writing and recording.

RYAN: Lastly, and thank you for your time. Is there any news that you would like to tell your fans about?

CHRYSTYNA: Loaded Gun EP releases February 29, 2016. Pre-orders will be available soon. I also have an awesome lyric video for Loaded Gun coming out. Any other updates can be found on my website as they come where you can also find links to my itunes, amazon and social media sites!
