Hi Candice, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m very good 🙂 Staying busy with the new music video coming out and I’m back in the studio making new music!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “What Do You Do 2 Me”?
Definitely! It was a fun song to write. It’s the only song on the album that we were writing more from a story idea than my personal experience. We were playing off of an idea of a girl who knows she’s in love with a guy who’s running around on her. It drives her crazy, but she can’t stay away.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I can’t say anything in specific. It was late one night and I was in the studio with my producers, Kuya Productions. We decided that we wanted to write something that sounded a little darker. It just evolved from there. I thought of the opening line “they told me your lips were poison, said stay away child” and we just kinda rolled with it!
What was it like to work with Choclair and how did that relationship develop?
It was great! He’s a really nice guy! We didn’t work much together in the studio but I did get to stop in and say hello when he was writing and recording his parts for the song. But we had a lot of fun to making the video together, despite how cold it was!
How was the film experience?
It was a really great crew to work with. It was really cold that night, but everyone still had fun joking around in between takes and all the shivering!
The single comes off your new album Against Concrete Walls – what’s the story behind the title?
The title is a lyric from the first single I released from the album (called “I Got This”). It’s basically my anthem song about my moving to Toronto and trying to make it in music. The line is “I’m strong but so small against concrete walls. Filled possibility throw all uncertainty away.”
How was the recording and writing process?
Different every time! The process was almost never the same. Every song evolved differently and I kinda like it that way. We let it come to us gradually. What I love the best about writing is that usually once we get a concept down, I can see how I can inject my own truth into it. My own experience and thoughts. I think it makes the song more real no matter how the process started.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics? Are they all based on life struggles?
I wouldn’t say that they’re all about life struggles, but I would say they’re all about life. They’re all about things that I’ve felt or sometimes experienced. Some are direct stories from my life. I feel like you can get inspiration from almost anything… a bit of a cliche but true! I think anything comes with an emotion attached to it. If you can tap into that emotion, that’s what you create something from.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m mostly doing shows in Ontario for the next little while. I did an across Canada tour in 2014 which took my from coast to coast and then in November 2015 I revisited western Canada for a tour. But you never know where I’m going to end up and we have a lot of plans for 2016. All dates are always posted at www.bandsintown.com/CandiceSand
What else is happening next in Candice Sand’s world?
Writing writing writing and recording! This year I’m back in the studio and making new music. Hoping that we can start releasing that project in 2017! I have a new team and I’m super excited about it!
